Walking around Wilmington

We are thinking about spending a weekend in Wilmington. We would like to know:

1. Assuming good weather, are there parks, attractions, etc. that can be walked to?

2. Are there reasonable hotels in the area?

Walking around Wilmington

One of the nicest parks in Wilmington is Rockford Park. Most of the other parks that I%26#39;d recommend are state parks (fee for entrance). Wilmington has a nice group of shops and restaurants along the Christiana River known as the Riverfront. It starts right behind the Amtrak train station at the Tubman-Garrett Park. A minor league baseball team (Bluerocks) and The Shipyard Shops (outlets) are located at the far end of the riverfront walkway. Take a look at www.riverfrontwilm.com for info. The Wilmington visitor%26#39;s bureau website is www.ci.wilmington.de.us/ Most hotels in the city are over $200 a night. Look out on Rt 202.

This weekend is the Bob Marley festival in Wilmington. You can visit http://peoplesfestival.com for more information. This festival gets bigger every year and should be fun.

As for parks and landscape, there are some really nice things to see in the Wilmington area. Yes, Rockford Park is nice and so are the state parks. But you might really consider visiting Winterthur, Hagley or the Brandywine River Museum. Kennett Square and Chadds Ford are also charming, just over the state line in PA. There you have Longwood Gardens and a couple wineries to choose from.

Hope this helps.

If you want to try Priceline:

biddingfortravel.com and my experience have priceline 3* rooms in Wilmington (3-4 downtown, one on Rt. 202) going for $50-65 per night. Keep in mind the downtown hotels will very likely charge for parking ($5-10/night) or, if you%26#39;re cheap and/or chancy, you can park on the street.

If you don%26#39;t mind going further out (south), Christiana/Newark 2.5* hotels (often the Hilton) go for under $50 /night and, if you don%26#39;t mind Fairfield Inns, you can often get that for under $30/night. (I found my May %26#39;06 stay there just fine.)
