My family with 3 teenagers is coming to D.C. area for vacation. We want to go to beach for the day. What does anyone recommend? We will have a car so transportation is not a problem.
Ocean City vs..Virginia Beach vs. any beach
Would depend on how much time during your day you want to devote to traveling. Virginia Beach will be approximately 3 hours or so from DC (one way - depending on your route and traffic conditions) .
Ocean City is much closer, but not as nice in my honest opinion.
Rehoboth Beach would be closer yet, There would be more for your teens to do in OC, but for just a day trip to enjoy the beach, am thinking it would be the best of your options.

As said above Rehoboth Beach would be closest and great for a day . If possible try to schedule your beach trip on a weekday. During peak season the roads from DC and resort roads are very crowded.
Rehoboth Beach is a good 3-3.5 hours from DC.
i%26#39;ve never driven from DC to rehoboth, but i don%26#39;t see how it COULD be 3-3 1/2 hours. i drive to rehoboth often from westminster MD....%26amp; it takes me 3 1/2 hours with SEVERAL stops along the way, and DC sure is a lot closer to rehoboth than westminster is!
Well, we just drove it and it took 3.5 hours each way. Now there was a little bit of traffic but not much. Fortunately, we are coming back in September so we%26#39;ll see!
It%26#39;s always been 3-3.5 hours, even after the Denton bypass. That didn%26#39;t help much.
ok, i%26#39;ll take your word for it...if you drove it, you should know! seems..illogical...but so many things do!
i actually made record time coming home this last time...3 hours from, well, actually lewes to westminster, using route 32 the whole way. don%26#39;t know how THAT happened LOL
well, excuse me...not the WHOLE way obviously...32 from crownsville to westminster, i meant.
(once again, mourning the lack of an ';edit'; option on this board!)
Just getting out of D.C. on New York Avenue and then RT. 50 can take anywhere from a half hour to several hours. We have driven this route even on weekdays, weekends, and off rush hour and there is bumper to bumper traffic on New York Avenue most of the time. It%26#39;s just the nature of the beast. Mileage around here is often not the predictor of time, rather traffic is.
Summer beach traffic is horrible no matter where you are going to/from. (One of the worst is probably OBX on a Saturday . . . sorry, I%26#39;m off the subject). Rehoboth%26#39;s beach is virtually a postage stamp. Erosion has really taken it%26#39;s toll on the area. It is VERY, VERY Crowded. VA beach is nice (wide with good waves), while OC has a boardwalk with all the junk that teens tend to like. That being said, if you go to a state park in delaware there are changing rooms and showers so you%26#39;ll be able to clean up before you hit the boardwalk for dinner. Have you considered staying overnight? Go on the west side and you%26#39;ll get decent accommodations that will allow you to reserve for one night (ie: Holiday Inn Express, etc).
