We rented a house in Lewes for a week, beginning Aug. 3, and have a few questions. Are you allowed to take a cooler with beer in it to the beach, (all of the beaches in the area)? If not, and we had coolies/huggies, are they strict about it? Are beach tags required on any of the beaches. I know parking will be most likely hard to come by, so do they have alternate transportation such as trams you can catch that will take you directly to a beach?
We are staying in a gated community on the bay, is all of Lewes a bay or is there an ocean side? Is parking still a problem at the beach in Lewes, (as compared to what I have read on here about Dewey and Rehobeth).
Also, I lived in the Phila. area many years ago, and miss the great hot roast beef sandwichs you could get there. Do you know if you can get them in the Rehobeth area since its not that far away?
Thanks for any help you guys can give me!

Beer, beach tags and parkingMicki
The beach in lewes is on the Delaware Bay with public meterd parking .You could go to Cape Henlopen State park which is just past the ferry terminal . It has parkin and access to both the bay and the ocean beach plus walking trails ,restrooms,,showers and concession stand .There is a park and ride lot on Rt 1 if you wanted to go into Rehoboth Beach that way. You could find decent Phila hoagies (subs here) and cheese steaks .The South Phila Roast Beef did not make it to our area. Remember to feed the meters and observe the speed limits in towns.

Beer, beach tags and parkingIn addition, if you choose to go to the beach in Dewey, they are very strict about beer consumption on the beach. I have seen numerous people asked to poor out beers and if they are at all uncooperative receive tickets and/or be arrested.
I%26#39;m not sure about Lewes or Rehoboth, but I always imagined them to be similar.
no beach tags necessary except on a very few isolated blocks...indian beach %26amp; silver lake, that%26#39;s about it.
huggies for beer won%26#39;t do it, you would need to be more subtle. they%26#39;re pretty strict. it%26#39;s too hot to drink beer on the beach anyway, if you want to sneak alcohol on you%26#39;re better off with something like a fruity rum punch you can put in an innocuous looking container, and nobody%26#39;s likely to ask for a sniff
Lewes beach is what they call a ';breakwater,'; at the mouth of the DE bay. No real waves %26amp; very gradual descent into deep water (so great for young kids). What is nice is plentiful metered parking right at the sand%26#39;s edge (.75/hr.) No beach fees. The town of Lewes has no ocean frontage, but at the edge of town you can pay $8.00/day to enter Cape Henlopen SP which does have a pristine (read non-commercial) ocean beach.
Although posted illegal, I have not found strict regulation of DISCREET beer consumption on Lewes %26amp; Rehoboth beaches, but if you call attention to yourself you could end up paying a fine or spending a night on the taxpayers!
Can%26#39;t help you on the roast beef sandwiches unless you want to drive to ';Bull on the Beach'; in OC MD (%26amp; maybe even then not what you%26#39;re looking for).
PS: Don%26#39;t label yourself a clueless tourist: Lewes is pronounced as ';Lewis,'; not ';Lewz.';
Thanks so much guys! I will take stryophone cups for drinks, just in case. I had heard something about the park and ride in Rehobeth, $7.00 per car...and the bus will take you right to the beach. Does that $7.00 include the bus ride, and what about the return trip? Dang parking meters everywhere else it seems:(...oh well.
Guess I will have to forget about the roast beef sandwichs unless I take the ferry over. In Wildwood Crest (at the Crest Tavern), t hey have awesome ones, if you guys ever get there.
I do remember it is called %26#39;Lewis%26#39; as all my friends call it %26#39;Lews%26#39;, so that at least clears that part up...hahaha ...I love being right!
Thanks again!
Micki
