Has anyone stayed at the Brandywine River Hotel? It seems OK -- prices are great, but am wondering if it is too isolated, modest and folksy for us. Am currently booked into the Hilton Christiana -- we will be visiting Longwood Gardens (from Philadelphia), Hagley Museum, possibly Winthur and exploring Wilmington downtown.
Advice is much appreciated.
Thanks
Brandywine River Hotel?Gundi,
I live in Wilmington and had never heard of the Brandywine River Hotel, but the pictures on the website do look nice. Have you considered staying in downtown Wilmington? That might be a better ';home base'; location than the Hilton, considering the attractions you%26#39;re visiting. Longwood Gardens is AMAZING, and Winterthur is fascinating.
Have a great trip!
Brandywine River Hotel?It%26#39;s been several years, but I%26#39;ve had clients stay at Brandywine River Hotel and they were usually charmed. Much smaller, more a ';boutique hotel'; than Hilton. Unless it%26#39;s changed a lot, ';folksy'; wouldn%26#39;t at all be the description -- more like understated elegance. Much closer to Longwood, Hagley, Winterthur than Hilton. About equidistant from downtown Wilmington.
Hilton is in the middle of suburban sprawl, close to a very large mall and lots of family-style restaurant chains like Chili%26#39;s. Brandywine Hotel, though right off a busy road, is in a much more pastoral setting -- Wyeth Country. In fact, it%26#39;s less than a mile from Brandywine River Museum, worth a trip if you like N.C., Andrew, or Jamie Wyeth%26#39;s work. Not many fast food places within three or four miles, and virtually no mid-price chain restaurants. Some fine dining nearby, and Hank%26#39;s Diner, across the street, is a famous locals%26#39; place where, in other seasons, you might sit next to Andy Wyeth, whose home is just up the road. (But they summer in Maine.)
If you like local flavor, Brandywine River Hotel. If you want anonymity and a familiar feel regardless of where you are, Hilton. (I totally understand, that%26#39;s often what I prefer.) If you want a chain hotel that%26#39;s closer to Longwood, Winterthur, Hagley, you might check out Hilton Garden Inn in Kennett Square.
Thank you all -- I totally understand the charm of the Brandywine. I live in a rural area, so that holds no extra allure for me. I think we will stay put -- unless I find a cancellation at the Montchanin.
Thanks
