What are the best lanes to be in, to use EZ Pass on I95 and the DMB, northbound and southbound?
EZ Pass Lanes
EZ pass is accepted in all lanes; The EZ pass ONLY lanes are well marked, and some toll points now have high-speed lanes on the left.
The DMB, and most bridges over the Delaware river, are now only collecting tolls westbound, usually $3.00, rather than collecting $1.50 each way (helps with congestion).
EZ Pass Lanes
The lanes are well marked when you get close to them, but when traffic is heavy I want to get into the best lanes well in advance.
I have that info for most of the trip from Boston to Florida, but I ask again, which lanes should I slide into approaching the DMB and the I95 tollboth in Deleware?
Generally speaking, the far left EZPass Only lanes are usually better than the EZPass Only lanes that are mixed in between the regular lanes.
There are times (both directions) at the I-95 booth when there are major backups in all lanes and even EZPassers might be waiting 10-15 minutes. Rude non-EZPassers might typically use the far left to get a beat on the stopped traffic towards the right before cutting back in, and EZPassers are forced to wait behind them to clear the left lane. It doesn%26#39;t take more than a few of these to cause a substantial chain-reaction backup. I%26#39;ve never seen a backup at the far left EZPass lane at the DMB.
It%26#39;s fairly easy to skip the I-95 tollbooth%26#39;s costs and the constant backups it causes by exiting (northbound) at Exit 109 in Maryland and returning to I-95 in Delaware, and reversing the process southbound.
And (not to throw this too off-topic)--if your final destination is north Jersey/NY or points north, there are more scenic, toll-free alternatives to traveling along the congested I-95 corridor which--while a few miles longer--often wind up being faster, as well.
Thanks Tubman. When exiting at 109, do I go to the east or west? I see a network of roads on both sides.
What alternate routes are you suggesting? I have tried I81, and the coastal route using the bridge-tunnel and Lewes-Cape May ferry, and 301 thru Bowie, MD.
You head northeast at Exit 109 (Md. 279) towards Newark. Traffic often starts backing up at this exit solid for the two miles to the toll booth, even for EZPassers.
And it can happen that way southbound, as well. You can bail at either Exit 3 (De. 273) or Exit 1 (De. 896) depending on when you sense things slowing down..
See http://tinyurl.com/2c6rcr, steps 8-11. You owe me $3 :-)
As for alternate routing, I was thinking about I-81...to I-78 for the NJ/NY area, and I-84 for New England.
