Summer Visit

My family (there are 12 of us) and my cousins (there are 8 of them) are planning on descending upon Rehoboth this year at the end of July (week of 23rd – 27th). This is a yearly trip we have made for the past 4 years to celebrate my mom%26#39;s birthday and have all her “children” under one roof again.

My dilemma this year is my mother%26#39;s birthday celebration. We have tried several things in the past with the group, but most of them have wound up being a mess. My mom has decided this year she would like to try a Crab Shack (that serves blues, no Alaskan) that everyone can go to and that is not too expensive. In addition, since we have several children under the age of 10, something kid friendly would be nice.

From reading various other posts and web sites, it seems that the following are our best choices:

Lazy Susan%26#39;s

Crab Barn

Claws Crab House

Jimmy Lynn%26#39;s Seafood

Are there any other places we should look at or any comments on the space/service/cost on the ones I have mentioned?

Any help in helping me plan this party is greatly appreciated!!!! TIA

Summer Visit

Hi,

It sounds like you%26#39;re looking for a place where you all can sit down to eat. Jimmy Lynn%26#39;s is takeout only. (Excellent, though!) I%26#39;m not sure about Lazy Susan%26#39;s, but it%26#39;s best known as a takeout place. Would you consider buying steamed crabs to eat at home?

Crab Barn on Route 1 closed and is now a restaurant called Wahoo. I don%26#39;t know about it as a crab place -- we ate there just once last year and decided it wasn%26#39;t worth going back. I think the original Crab Barn is still in operation out near Long Neck on Route 24.

In Dewey Beach there%26#39;s Chicken Ed%26#39;s, where you order at the window and then eat your crabs (or chicken) at picnic tables outside or in a screened area. It%26#39;s been around for decades. Lots of kids there. (No alcohol, if I remember correctly.)

The one place I%26#39;d definitely suggest is Crabbers Cove at Ruddertowne in Dewey Beach, a step above Chicken Ed%26#39;s. It%26#39;s designed for big groups who want to crack some crabs, drink some beer, and enjoy the bay view. If you go around sunset, it can be spectacular. And it%26#39;s definitely a family place.

Another possibility is Fenwick Crab House, on the southbound side of Route 1 in Fenwick Island. I suspect they can easily accommodate 20; we%26#39;ve been there with 12 (including several kids). It%26#39;s 30 minutes from Rehoboth, but probably worth the drive. Prices are very good and the crabs are outstanding. Good enough that we%26#39;ve had their frozen crab cakes sent to friends in the midwest.

And, of course, if you%26#39;re willing to brave the traffic in Ocean City, MD, Phillips Crab House has been famous for probably 50+ years. Extensive menu so there are lots of other choices for those who don%26#39;t want crab.

Wherever you decide to go, hope you have a wonderful week!

try crabbie dicks on rt1. we love the food, we always have great service and i seem to remember a space where they can put tables together. im pretty sure the crab barn on 24 is still open and they have great food too.

wythany %26amp; RBGIRl, thanks for the suggestions!! We are looking for somewhere to go sit down, since my mom ';does not want to clean anything up afterwards'; and who can blame her!!

It sounds like Chicken Ed%26#39;s might be a little less ';formal'; than we are looking for, but Crabbers Cove, Fenwick Crab house %26amp; Crabby Dicks sound worth investigating! I will check them out.

Thanks again for the great suggestions!!

The Long Neck Crab Barn has been closed. It is now an AMVETS ?

Wow....I didn%26#39;t know that %26amp; it%26#39;s a shame...I will miss it.

Lazy Susan%26#39;s has indoor seating or picnic tables on the deck...very informal but small %26amp; often very crowded.

I work at the Atlantis Inn on Rehoboth Ave and can personally vouch for both Lazy Susan%26#39;s (on Route One) and Claws (on Rehoboth Ave) -- both serve excellent , excellent crabs as well as are group and family friendly. CrabbyDick%26#39;s is great too, yummy food and fun atmosphere. Crabber%26#39;s Cove (in Dewey) can%26#39;t be beat for the view. The Crab Barn is now a place called Wahoo, I hear good things but haven%26#39;t been just yet. Any of these places should fit what you are looking for.

Have a great family reunion/Mom%26#39;s birthday!

I would recommend Lazy Susan%26#39;s or Crabber%26#39;s Cove. You should be able to call ahead to Lazy Susan%26#39;s and arrange something, but I would suggest Crabber%26#39;s Cove as top choice for your event, mainly because the atmoshphere and view will be fantastic, but also b/c it should be roomier and feel less crowded. I plan to go there myself with family a few weeks before you. Have fun!

i can%26#39;t speak for any of them, but you should be aware of one thing.

';crabby d%26#39;s

offends some people with their double entrendres.

they seem to have stopped doing that on the highway sign, after major complaints from the community. that kind of semi-vulgaritry is probably still within the restaurant, %26amp; i don%26#39;t know how bawdy a sense of humor your mother has...she might be fine with it. i myself don%26#39;t care for it.

never ate there...might be delicious, just a warning on that front.

oddly enough....i couldn%26#39;t even post the name of crabby d

s...

got a message that it was bad language LOL

Over the Memorial Day weekend the above named Crabby place ran out of crabs and were not telling those coming in until after they had their drinks .
