Beer, beach tags and parking

We rented a house in Lewes for a week, beginning Aug. 3, and have a few questions. Are you allowed to take a cooler with beer in it to the beach, (all of the beaches in the area)? If not, and we had coolies/huggies, are they strict about it? Are beach tags required on any of the beaches. I know parking will be most likely hard to come by, so do they have alternate transportation such as trams you can catch that will take you directly to a beach?

We are staying in a gated community on the bay, is all of Lewes a bay or is there an ocean side? Is parking still a problem at the beach in Lewes, (as compared to what I have read on here about Dewey and Rehobeth).

Also, I lived in the Phila. area many years ago, and miss the great hot roast beef sandwichs you could get there. Do you know if you can get them in the Rehobeth area since its not that far away?

Thanks for any help you guys can give me!

Beer, beach tags and parking

Micki,

The state of Delaware owns all of the beaches. Except for the state parks, there are no beach tags. Our state income taxes pay for the upkeep and sand replenishment. There are no local or state sales taxes so the many beach communities only have a minor property tax and parking meters to meet their budgets.

There are ';trolleys'; and DART buses that can take you from Lewes to Rehoboth and Dewey. However, take your bike and bike between the Lewes and Rehoboth. The bike trail takes you through Henlopen State park. By the way, Lewes is on Delaware Bay and the waves are very small. The town predates English colonization and was founded by the Dutch. To the south of town is Cape Henlopen, directly across the mouth of the Delaware Bay from Cape May, New Jersey. Around the bend from the Cape is the town of Rehoboth.

Parking is going to be a problem depending upon the time of day. The earlier in the day, the less chance of a problem. The gay beach in Rehoboth is called Poodle Beach, and there are no parking meters there. However, you will need to pay for a parking permit for the day and hang the tag in your window. Look for Prospect, Penn, Stockley, St. Lawrence streets. The other gay beach is inside the state park and you will pay an out of state parking permit for the day (very reasonable). Parking is a lot easier at the state park and if you sit on the left side of the jetty, you won%26#39;t get much of a hassle with the beer inside of a coolie/huggie. Just remember that there are no trashcans at any of the state parks in Delaware. What you bring in you must take out with you.
