It has always been my dream to tour the entire u.s. coast to coast. I live in Delaware, and would like to plan a trip east to west across America and back again. I would like to go by car or possibly train, or maybe a combination of both. Any suggestions for routes? How long will it take? Any other advice? Is this really doable?

do it every year...starting next week for 2006.
the quick routes from here woulkd be to get on i-70 in baltimore all the way to denver or get off that on to i-80 in pa and it will take you all the way to s.f.
or go the scenic way by getttin on route 50 in ocean city and follow the signs to sacramento ca.
it could take as little as 3 days with a partner to drive with or as long as it takes dependig on what you get into on the way.
this year we are off to eugene or byway of indianapolis in, cody wy, reno nv, quincy ca and back all in 4 weeks.....
peace

I%26#39;d be doing some research on the old Rt. 66 %26amp; some of the unique and interesting things to see along the way...Charles Kuralt has some excellent books that cover out-of-the-way and unusual places, monuments %26amp; festivals.
We had wanted badly to do this with our camper but with the price of gas it%26#39;s now a tossup whether to take the fuel-efficient car %26amp; stay in motels.
I know Amtrak has a gorgeous trans-continental route through Canada in glass-ceilinged cars ...you eat %26amp; sleep on the train...breathtaking scenery you will never see from the highways...the price may be comparable to driving %26amp; staying in motels.
Best wishes
