biking

We%26#39;re planning a late Apriil trip. What are the best bike routes? Where can I get info? Looking for a moderately priced place to stay.

Thank you!

BIKING

There are many opportunities for cycling in the Rehoboth Beach/Dewey Beach area. Bicycles can be rented for the family to enjoy a pleasant outing through the streets of Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach and the surrounding area. From May 15 to September 15, riding on the Boardwalk may be done between 5:00 AM and 10:00 AM only. For additional information call 302-227-6181 or 302-227-2233.

For cyclists desiring a longer ride, Sussex Cyclists (a local cycling group) leads day and evening rides from 11 to 50 miles mostly through rural Sussex County roads. Visitors are welcome to participate. Information is available at http://sussexcyclists.home.att.net or by calling the ride leader on 302-645-6633. All riders must wear approved helmets and carry liquid adequate for the ride. Cue sheets for the rides are available on the web site.

For your safety, please drive carefully. (Note: bikers are asked to obey all laws governing motor vehicles.) For information on Bicycle Route 1 (a north-south route the length of Delaware) and Delaware Bicycling Maps, contact the Delaware Dept. of Transportation bicycle and pedestrian Coordinator at 302-760-2157, or visit their web site at www.deldot.net.

Back road Bicycling and Auto Tours: The Southern Delaware Heritage Trail connects rivers, scenic drives, local heritage and historic sites, country inns, bed and breakfasts motels and antiquing. The loop trail is marked by signs which connect several historic towns west of Delaware%26#39;s beach resorts. The trail route provides 130 miles of connecting trails for cyclists and more than 70 miles of scenic country roads for motorists who like to venture off the beaten path.

* My family and I love to bike at the beach, but ever-increasing traffic makes pedaling around Rehoboth and Dewey risky business. When we want to relax and enjoy some real beach scenery, we head to Cape Henlopen State Park (302-645-8983), 15 minutes north of Rehoboth in Lewes. Most of the route is flat, so kids can do it. Highlights include the only World War II observation tower in the area that you can actually enter and climb, the state%26#39;s largest sand dune, a quarter-mile of fishing pier and a hands-on nature center. I highly recommend signing your kids up to seine the Delaware Bay with a Delaware State Parks guide. Entrance fee.

* Another good biking spot: Lewes itself -- the quaintest of Delaware%26#39;s quaint towns. Besides antiques shops and novelty stores, this 17th-century town features a spooky old cemetery and a charming historic district named Shipcarpenter Square for its distinctive architecture. Several historic sites are open to the public; check with the Visitors Bureau (302-645-8073). Finish your bike ride with a cold drink at one of several restaurants at Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf (302-645-8862), also the launching site for whale-watching, dolphin, fishing and sunset cruises.

You can also bike south from Dewey to Bethany Beach (about 11 miles) along Route 1. But even though the traffic is lighter before the summer season, I can%26#39;t emphasize enough how dangerous it is to ride bikes along Route 1 between Rehoboth and Lewes. Every year there%26#39;s at least one death and several injuries from car/bike collisions.

This trail is only 3.6 miles, but it%26#39;s supposed to be really pretty: bikekinetix.com/t_de/de_rail/junction_breakw…

Here%26#39;s a page with lodging info: http://www.beach-net.com/LodgehotelDB.html

Depending on how long you%26#39;ll be staying, you might want to consider renting a condo or cottage. It%26#39;s nice to have the extra room and the kitchen, and off-season rates are quite low. A good rentals realtor is Long %26amp; Foster, 800 272-2828, or …longandfoster.com/Vacation/Dewey_Beach_Vaca…

Hope you have great weather!

As the previous poster stated you can bike south from Dewey there are safe shoulders on Rt 1 all the Indian River State Park. there is excellent biking at Cape Henlopen State in Lewes. If you take Rt 1 North from Dewey and turn Rigth at Wawa you can pick up a trail to Cape henlopen. I do not reccomend riding on the streets in ,lewes , Rehoboth , or Dewey . these roads were not built for the traffic they now handle and neither bikers or drives are willing to share. Rt 1 between Rehoboth and Lewes is not safe for bikers. People are killed every year. Check out the Quality Inn.Walk to the beach and indoor pool. It%26#39;s on Rt1 . Not sure where the deviding line is technically between Dewet and Rehoboth.

You definately want to get one of the bicycling maps...they%26#39;re excellent. Different colors for various routes to indicate safety, scenic and other ratings. Check with any cycle shop or DELDOT.

Fairly new is Cape Henlopen%26#39;s ';Junction %26amp; Breakwater Trail';...this is an abandoned railbed that once connected Lewes %26amp; Rehoboth. It has been paved with crushed stone %26amp; has minimal grade so is perfect for biking. Very scenic as well; mostly wooded, but wait %26#39;til you see the wetlands view from the trestle at Holland Glade. This is the Delaware many tourists never see. At present, the trail extends to the West Rehoboth area, from where you can access downtown Rehoboth safely isolated from Rt. 1. Eventually, the trail will extend to Lewes as well, but currently dead-ends at Wolfe Glade (also very scenic).

If you go: From Rt. 1 Northbound, turn right onto Wolfe Neck Rd. (At the WaWa, just before the Rt. 24 intersection at McDonalds). You will find the parking area on your right exactly one mile back this road. It is a day-use area of Cape Henlopen SP so fees are charged (envelope honor-system)in season (May-Oct).

Another great spot to bike is Prime Hook Wildlife Refuge, which is maybe 10 miles north of Lewes.

You can%26#39;t access any other sections of Cape Henlopen park from the J%26amp;B trail, but if you pay at one area your receipt will include access to the others.

The main park has great black-topped trails (try the one from the WWII buildings to the beach...you will hit 35mph just coasting!!)

Also, the Gordon%26#39;s Pond area (accessed from Rehoboth) has a section of trail that is approved for biking that takes you to a scenic observation deck.

Thanks for all the great info. I%26#39;ve ordered the maps and will stay away from Route 1.

Thank you!

I%26#39;ve posted a number of maps of good routes from bethany Beach, both north and south, on our beach house web site.
