Hello and good afternoon everyone!
My name is Paul, I am in the process of inteviews and I am going for my third in two weeks for a position in Newark Delaware.
I know there is a discussion board for Newark but no one has posted there since June 06 so I hope I will not get flamed for asking here relocation questions concerning Newark.
I just want to know everything and anything I need to know about Newark. I want to rent a home or Apartment so any good Aprtment Complex%26#39;s? How is the cost of living in Newark? How are taxes like payroll and sales? What is there to do in Newark or should we just go to Penn or Maryland or DC? How long is the commute to major cities like Philly, DC, and Maryland?
I appreciate so much the help in this matter!
Paul
Relocating Need Help!
Paul,
I doubt anyone will flame you, as you ask some good questions.
I cannot answer most of them, but can tell you that Newark, among other things is a college town (University of Deleware) and is about a 2 hour drive to Washington, DC and probably 45 to 60 minutes to Philly.
The other bonus to Delaware is that there is no sales tax.
Otherwise, I leave it up to other more informed people to answer the rest of your questions.
Good Luck!

Relocating Need Help!
patval,
Delaware has no sales tax, so that factor is about as good as it gets. Don%26#39;t know enough about KY income or property taxes to be able to compare with Delaware. I suspect housing costs more here. I can tell you PA%26#39;s property taxes are much higher, income taxes are much lower. Lots of people live in PA and work in DE.
Newark%26#39;s a typical big-college town. U of D has a lovely campus that has sprawled all over town. If you%26#39;re under 30, you%26#39;ll find a ton of stuff to do -- good bars, live music, lively restaurants, campus events open to the public. Newark is just winding up its restaurant week, and there%26#39;s a food/wine festival in the fall.
People do commute to Philly or Baltimore, but it%26#39;s a long haul from Newark. If that%26#39;s a factor, look for housing near I-95.
Nobody will flame you for your questions; Delaware%26#39;s a small state and that%26#39;s why there%26#39;s not much activity on the boards. But the TripAdvisor staff may close this topic. Their position is that relo questions aren%26#39;t appropriate since they don%26#39;t relate to travel. I think that%26#39;s too bad, but it%26#39;s their site and they get to make the rules!
Thank you for all the help in my questions it has been a great help!
I was wondering is there a site that has discussion boards that I could ask the same question without worrying it would get pulled?
Thank you,
Paul
There are active forums which would have more appeal to relocating residents at http://www.city-data.com/forum/
But I doubt anybody is going to flame you here, and it%26#39;s not a given that TA will remove this thread. (And there actually is a Newark forum here when you post and select the drop-down.)
Paul
In the Newark area there are no big city slums or crime. Your would be 1hr to1 1/2 hours from the Delaware beaches,Philadelphia and Baltimore sports .Newark is a college town. The outlying areas upscale . If it interests you quite close to De Parks racing and slots.

Hi,
i%26#39;m a Newark resident, native of DE. Here%26#39;s the link to the local newspaper, The News Journal: www.delawareonline.com
There are many good apartment complexes, i%26#39;d recommend the Pike Creek area, very nice area, lots of condos, townhomes and apartments, many green %26amp; natural areas. But it%26#39;s pricy. Also some nice apartments scattered around Newark, but it%26#39;s mostly college residences downtown Newark, more traffic and noise. Some nice apartments on Old Baltimore Pike and on Rt. 896, south / outside of Newark. Many suburban developments all over newark.
I dont personally think payroll taxes are high here. Big benefit to DE is there is low property taxes, and NO SALES TAX - NJ is like 7%, Maryland is about 8%, and PA has 6-8 % (i think) - that all adds up in my eyes.
Things to do: many museums, art galleries, playhouses / theaters in Wilmington, such as the Delaware Art Museum, The Delaware Center for Contemporary Art; lots of restaurants %26amp; some bars of course in Wilmington; some big shopping malls - Christiana Mall, Concord Mall, Brandywine Town Center. They have many stores and movie theaters.
Lots of good state parks and natural areas in Delaware for hiking, biking, walking, picnicing, canoeing, boating.
Also, if you like the beach, there are some great beaches south about 1.5 hrs - Rehobeth, Cape Henlopen, Lewes, Dewey, Bethany, Fenwick. Lots of big state parks near Newark %26amp; Wilmington: White Clay Creek Preserve, Brandywine Creek, Lums Pond, Killens Pond, Delaware Seashore.
Philadelphia is about 45-60 min from Newark; Washington is about 2hrs, Baltimore 1.5 - 2 hrs; New York : 2.5 hrs.
Village of Barrett%26#39;s run is really nice. Christiana Meadows (www.christianameadows.com) has pretty big apartments for a nice price. But also look in surrounding areas such as Bear, New Castle, WIlmington even Middletown (if you dont mind a 20 - 30 min commute to Newark).
Delaware is actually pretty nice but honestly not much to do for single folks except for bars. Everything good is in Philly (30 min away) and Baltimore (35-40 min away). Good Luck
