Does anyone know when the Drag Queen Volleyball is and where is the afternoon tea dance?

haven%26#39;t seen it in the cape gazette, but you might try looking here

Looking for a place for either 2 or 4 people for Thurs Aug 10 until Sat Aug 12th. (not sure yet if the second couple is coming)
I want to be withing walking distance to the beach and if the 2nd couple comes we could easily do a suite type set up or condo. This is not over the Sat-Sun period so not sure if that would be an issue in trying to find a place.
Any recommendations if just 2 people = motel/hotel even would work. Or if we end up being 4 people.
Thanks
Rohoboth this week Aug 10-12 accomodations need advice asapRe my original post:
Just got word the second couple will not be coming so only need accomodations for 2 people.
Rohoboth this week Aug 10-12 accomodations need advice asapCondos are only on a week by week basis, but since it%26#39;s going to be just two of you, a hotel should work anyway. Something decent and close to the beach might be a little pricey, but I would recommend either the Sands, the Bellmoor or the Boardwalk Plaza.
I would call whatever hotel that you%26#39;re interested in. The websites show no availability, except for the Bellmoor. You%26#39;ll also want to have your wallet handy. The least expensive room that they had was $322 per night.
everything booked up at the places suggested. Found rooms at The Sandcastle.
We recently returned from Rehoboth- stayed at the Atlantis Inn this time around- Very Pleased... clean rooms, friendly service, walking distance to everything, and able to use the ';internet special'; at $155. night. We%26#39;ve stayed at the Atlantic Sands and The Breakers in the past... we%26#39;ve always been pleased, wish we were still in Rehoboth!
So how was the Sandcastle?
we were so disappointed in the dining in reboth beach area that we stopped here as a last ditched effort when we were leaving. I WISH WE CAME HERE FIRST!!!! they have some of the best seafood i have ever had! the balls were delicious, the crabcakes were phenomenal, the bisque was delicious - even the fries were yummy!!! definitely stop here - the BEST food in the area!
Where is it located and what were the prices like?
it%26#39;s on route 1, north of town.
i%26#39;ve never eaten there.....the vulgar ';double entendres'; turn me off, as they do many people. there was such a hub-bub in the cape gazette, people writing letters to the editor objecting to their roadside signs, you wouldn%26#39;t believe! when i drove past it in july, i noticed the sign didn%26#39;t seem to contain any vulgarities, for a change...
I have to tell you that i, too was very turned off by the signs posted - just references about their crab ';balls'; instead of caked - a novelty for them. but i tell you the food is SO worth it - and we weren%26#39;t offended by anyone or anything inside - my husband and my 2 kids, 6 and 9 were also equally inpressed. they had crayons to color on the brown paper table and they gave us a bucket of popcorn when we sat down. the waitress was extremely nice and helpful, too. where was it? let me get out a map -

4534 hwy 1, rehoboth, de and another opened in delaware city, de - see website and good eatin%26#39;!
i believe the ';original'; one is in fells point, in baltimore MD....
now, crab balls are NOT the same thing as crab cakes exactly...that%26#39;s a legit thing....but this particular place made a real effort to, um, exploit the name in a way that some of us find offensive. and other things as well.
nonetheless, glad you enjoyed it and i just hope they keep it toned down.
oh...forgot to say... where the heck did you EAT that you were so disappointed?
i think there%26#39;s plenty of GREAT food in rehoboth!
Just got to say, I agree w/ ';dogmom'; - lots of great family type places to eat. We recently returned from Rehoboth- very pleaced w/ DosLocos, Arenas, Nicola Pizza, and Dogfish Head (although this one is more of a bar atmosphere).
We%26#39;ll be sure to try Crabby Dicks next time around- we did see it, noticed the play-on words, weren%26#39;t sure.
Also a tip for next time- pick up a copy of the Rehoboth Beach Main Street discount book at the convention center. Lots of great legitimate coupons that you won%26#39;t find other places.
We have gone to Ocean City, MD on and off for many years and have always gone to see the Greaseband at the Bottle and Cork. We went last year and took my son and his fiancee (who we thought might be too young to appreciate the oldies music) but they loved the Greaseband. We were sitting on the back porch the other night listening to oldies and lamented that we wouldn%26#39;t be going to OC this year and woudn%26#39;t be able to see the Greaseband because everyone had a busy schedule and we couldn%26#39;t coordinate a week together. So the two of us decided to do a long weekend with a Monday night just to come down and see the Greaseband. Can%26#39;t wait to get there and hope the weather stays hot!
Finn,
Are you serious?? This band was maybe good 20 yrs ago but today they are tired and hokey.
My title is my question. I%26#39;m drop into OC a few times a year and have recently heard about midway slots. I was wondering whether it might be worth a gambol (get it!) over that way on my way to OC. Am thinking of spending a nite just to kill time before arriving in OC after Labor Day.
Any comments or suggestions would be welcome.
Also, I%26#39;ve read nice comments about Holiday Inn Express in Harrington, so that%26#39;s where I%26#39;m thinking of staying.
Other suggestions or comment welcome too!
Slots. Harness racetrack. State fair (July). For tourists, that%26#39;s pretty much it.
The minimum required payback on slots is 87% which, relatively speaking, isn%26#39;t bad. (West Virginia is 80%, Atlantic City is 83%).
thanks!
good cheap buffet there too (at the slots).
Hi
We are coming to house hunt in the Newark DE area next month.
Someone suggested the Middleton and Odessa areas as places to live.
Can anyone tell me how far from the University of DE these towns are and if these are desirable areas?
Looking to find a nice area, that has a good reputation as we will probably have to sell in the next 3 years.
Thanks for any information!
According to Yahoo Maps, Middletown is about 18 miles -- 29 minutes -- from campus. Odessa is a little closer to Newark.
For ';campus,'; I used 17 w. main St., 19711 the address of the Trabant Student Center. But as I mentioned in an earlier post, the UD campus is quite spread out. You might want to use your husband%26#39;s new work address and check the real commute. My impression is that the traffic is pretty bad during rush hour, so the trip length might be optimistic.
Middletown is a rapidly growing area ';below the canal.'; The Chesapeake %26amp; Delaware Canal, linking the two bays, used to be the de facto dividing line between the urban/suburban/industrial (northern) part of the state and the rest of the state, which was definitely more rural.
Until this decade, Middletown was basically a sleepy farm town. Now it%26#39;s one of the state%26#39;s fastest growing areas. Here%26#39;s an article that typifies how Middletown is changing: www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article…
The Wilmington paper has a special publication called Midstate Living. Middletown is toward the northern end of that target area. Check out www.midstateliving.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section… -- it%26#39;ll give you some sense of the area.
Don%26#39;t know anything about specific housing developments, sorry.
Hi
Thank you so much for your wonderful post and links to other sites.
I checked mapquest and Middleton appears to be about 15 miles from Glascow which is where my husband will be looking.
It appears in regards to realestate that you can get more for your money, BUT it doesn%26#39;t appear there are many stores or dining in that area.
We may have to stick to the Newark area.
Thanks again. I will check out that last web link you posted.
The middletown-odessa area is one of the fastest areas for development in the state. Farm land is being converted into suburbs. Right now, it takes 1/2 hour to get to middletown by car, and that will probably get worse as traffic continues to increase.
I would consider Cecil County maryland as another option. Development hasn%26#39;t gotten as bad there, so the traffic is lighter and housing costs are still low.
I live in Newark and the housing market here is out of sight. Small houses in town are selling for over 200k.
Hi Sister Amy,
Thank you so much for the information regarding Middleton and Odessa.
We will be coming to Newark to find a house over Labor Day. Sad hearing the news of the house prices being so high :(
I truly appreciate your time in posting a response!
I think anywhere in northern DE is going to be steep...
If you%26#39;ve never been to Odessa, by all means visit...if you love historic architecture, you may just fall in love...some blocks are nearly 100% authenticly restored homes...as if time passed this town by.
Not much else to offer, though, its a ';bedroom community';; Middletown is more of a town with a clean, seemingly healthy business district.
Hi ,
Yes, I do love architecture. We will definately check out Odessa when we are there, thanks for the tip!
We will be there next week to find a house!
Thanks for the post!
Chicagolandgirl -
Hope you%26#39;ll let us know how your trip goes and what you decide!
Hi
I absolutely will give you an update when we return.
Keep your fingers crossed that we will be able to find a house in 5 days :)
Again thanks to all who have posted!!
Hi. I am looking to rent a house for a mini-week in September that is on the water (bayside) or on the beach. Considering it will be off season I think I can find something for the mini-week. I found this one site on the web that shows a house with indoor and outdoor pool etc. It looks great but I can%26#39;t seem to find any reviews or anything. Could it be that it is too good to be true - anyone can post great pictures and description on the web. How can I check if this is for real? The site is www.bethany-rentals.com I don%26#39;t have a lot of time to search the whole internet - so any suggestions for any other house would be appreciated. We will be a large group. Any other beach in Delaware or MD is also fine.
Thank you
Is this too good to be true? Bethany rental suggestions?It%26#39;s not too good to be true--prices drop like a rock after Labor Day, and I%26#39;m assuming you realize the pools aren%26#39;t part of the house, but belong to the community.
Most important that you may not realize--it%26#39;s a few miles to the ocean and the heart of Bethany (the mailing address for this community is actually Ocean View, a totally different town) and you%26#39;ll need to drive from the house to get to the beach or pretty much anything else you want to do.
If the house were on or walking distance to the beach, you%26#39;d be paying a lot more than what they%26#39;re asking in September. Good luck!
Is this too good to be true? Bethany rental suggestions?Have you considered a condo?? We stay at Sea Colony in Bethany Beach - -oceanfront high rise resort with private beach, several pools (some indoor) and other offerings. They also have townhouses and homes across the street in the tennis community. Everything is centrally located to town and close to Ocean City and Rehoboth Beach. Call local Bethany Beach realtors for rental info. Don%26#39;t go through Sea Colony%26#39;s site - Resort Quest (too expensive). Try Tansey Warner or Crowley - both have web sites and you%26#39;ll be able to view the condo and townhouse offerings. The prices drop dramatically mid Sept. - the owners want to get a few more rentals in before Fall. Very reasonable. We leave this Saturday!!!!!
or try vrbo.com
Renting direct from the owner saves the commissions.
Should be some Sea Colony units on there if that%26#39;s what you%26#39;re after.
We are a married 43 year old couple with a 20 yr old son. We are seriously considering a move to DE to get out of NJ. We currently have a boat that we keep in a marina for 3000 per year. Our prop tax is over 6000. We are looking to be close to the water. Can anyone give be insights on what area may be good your us?
You%26#39;ll love DE%26#39;s prop taxes...I think you%26#39;d have to own a shopping mall to be paying 6K! I%26#39;m sure your insurance and auto registration costs will also be much lower.
Many, many water access communities on both the Rehoboth %26amp; Assawoman bays %26amp; their tributaries...%26amp; even more brand new ones springing up as I write this.
If you prefer small town living, take a look at Milton (on the Broadkill River) or Millford (on the Missipillion River) , these offer ocean/bay access %26amp; are close to Rehoboth for shopping/entertainment.
RE prices have escalated in recent years, but seem to be shifting to a buyer%26#39;s market. If you go with manufactured housing, I%26#39;d strongly suggest only buying one on a deeded lot, unless you want to risk being kicked out in a few years!
Thanks Daddio
We did go down this weekend and found a lot that we liked. Do you really think that they%26#39;ll kick you off those lease lands?
If you start reading the local papers, you will realize this has become a major concern for those on fixed income %26amp; other local workers who can only afford to rent. They have appealed to their legislators for protection.
Owners of rental communities, particularly water front %26amp; water view, are being bombarded with offers to sell to developers. Even those who are jacking the ground rents up as often and as much as they legally can admit it%26#39;s awfully tempting to cash out.
Thanks again, we did look at a waterfront property and the rents was 550 a month and I was curious what guarantee you have that they wil let you live on the land for years. Do any of them guarantee a certain amount of years? What do you here of those pot-nets?
We are thinking about moving to Selbyville.
We have two children. Trying to gather all the info we can. Please give us your thoughts. Thank you....
I%26#39;d take a look at the current ';Living in Delaware'; post for good general information which may help with your relocation decision.
Selbyville itself is a relatively small town fairly close to the beach. The area is attracting a fair number of development geared towards retirees.
Not sure exactly what you%26#39;re looking for in considering a move--maybe you are looking for a less urbanized setting for your life. If you%26#39;re looking for a heavy-duty white-collar career opportunity, you probably won%26#39;t find it here.
Selbyville is a relatively quiet small town .You would have easy access to Ocean City Md. or Bethany Beach. There is a Food Lion but no other easy large shopping places close. Indian River School District has a brand new High School , VERY old Middle School. Not sure of the elementary school in Selbyville . There are not a lot of well paying jobs in the area ,A skilled tradesman or professional would have no trouble otherwise job search first. Do to the chicken plants in the area if would help if you understand Spanish.
Thanks for the replies. Any info on shopping, entertainment? Actually there is a fairly new middle school on rt. 17. We are planning another trip down to meet with the schools. I really appreciate any suggestions or info you can share : )
Selbyville itself may be rural, but the highway (US 113) is right nearby, with the aforementioned Food Lion grocery store and other businesses for necessities.
Otherwise, the best shopping and entertainment is to be found at the beaches--Rehoboth, DE and Ocean City, MD primarily. There are smaller beach towns in between (Fenwick Island, Bethany Beach and Dewey Beach, DE) which are fine, but largely shut down in the off-season.
Rehoboth has a large number of outlet stores and a Wal-Mart (all tax-free) and is about 40 minutes away. There is closer shopping in Berlin, MD (Wal-Mart, Home Depot, outlets) but you will pay sales tax.
Ocean City is about 20 minutes away and is larger than Rehoboth--a ten-mile stretch of fully-developed highway. The shopping in Ocean City you won%26#39;t find close to Selbyville is largely tourist-oriented.
The nearest shopping mall with major chains is in Salisbury, MD (40 minutes). Salisbury also has a minor-league baseball team and a big hospital.
Many of the entertainment options associated with both Rehoboth and Ocean City are seasonal, but you will be able to find movies, live music and a lot of restaurants open in both year-round.
I can%26#39;t believe I found this post as we are also thinking of moving to Selbyville. We%26#39;ll be taking early retirement in 2008. I%26#39;m posting this as a bump. If anyone has any other comments on selbyville or other small towns that are not too far from the beach. We also heard there are some lakes in the area. I%26#39;d be interested in knowing more about that too.
Thanks!
It does seem that everything about Selbyville and the area has been pretty much covered here. Very good job, by the way!
We live in Selbyville, have lived right in town for the past 13 years, having moved from Ocean City. We wanted a bigger house, more room, and out of the tourist traffic, but still close to OC. That is exactly what we found in Selbyville. We have a nice sized lot, and a lot of privacy, so we have been lucky.
If you are not interested in the older houses in town, there are now three new developments, one in town, and two, as you head out of town.
Not Selbyville sepecific, but just wanted to mention that almost everything is cheaper in DE, even before the no sales tax is factored in.
Insurance, auto registrations (inspections are included), alcohol, etc... food %26amp; gas are about the same as neighboring states.
If still shopping around I would also look at Milton and Milford.
Thank you all! I keep checking back to this website to see if anyone added anything. I have visited Delaware twice since the spring. I have a few specific questions for the locals...
I was checking the crime rate as it compares to cities near where I live (www.areaconnect.com) I was surprised at the relatively high crime rate in Delaware! For example the very high rate of rape in Selbyville vs Somerville, NJ. I checked other towns in Delaware too and found overall that the crime rate was often higher than the national average. Any thoughts on that?
We traveled around Milford, Milton, Lewes, Seaford, Georgetown and a few other areas. Here is my observation: There are a lot of small ';shacks'; or mobile homes, a lot of minorities and/or immigrants living in these areas and then down the street is a McMansion. I%26#39;m sure a lot of these high-priced developments have cropped up in the past 5 years.... Do you think that%26#39;s leading to a lot of the crime in the area? General resentment over the changes taking place?
Can we talk honestly about the changes taking place in Delaware without offending anyone? I honestly don%26#39;t want to get into a political debate over illegal immigrants, etc. but only asking whether it is the cause of the high crime and whether there is general unrest in the state as a result. Or even if us yankees coming into Delaware is being met with resentment.
We visited Rehoboth and fell in love w/the area! We have returned each of the past 5 summers w/our teenagers and were never disappointed until last year. We were there in early July 2005, and although we realize that the ';updates'; for the beach were necessary, unfortunately the surf was a BIG disappointment! The ocean bottom went out for a short distance, then took a dramatic drop. Rather then being able to body-surf and boogie-board as we always enjoyed, the waves relentlessly would pick you up, and spit you out ...ouch!!! Didn%26#39;t matter if high or low tide, we always came crashing into the sand. We were told that nature would eventually even things out again, but we%26#39;re just wondering...
We really would love to return, but are considering ';beaching-it'; at Bethany, and just visiting Rehoboth for a ';walk-about';.
Does anyone have any comment about this, and/or how things are this season???
As I recall, Rehoboth has always had a pretty sharp drop-off and relatively heavy surf. Bethany has always been the choice for shallower water and gentler waves. Even Fenwick was always better than Rehoboth proper.
pzp, %26#39;always'; has nothing to do with the question...the beach replenishment last year did a REAL number on rehoboth %26amp; dewey both!
finally getting down there next week to dewey....can%26#39;t wait! and hoping the beach has shaped up@
i don%26#39;t mind a drop off, as long as the waves don%26#39;t break right ON the sand...that is DANGEROUS, wherever you are!
Thanks ';dogmom';: Yes, you understand my question regarding the surf at Rehoboth since the replenishment.
Let us know how how you find Dewey this season, and if you happen to take a stroll up to Rehoboth, I%26#39;d appreciate any comments you might have.
We love the ocean and can%26#39;t wait till we can visit again!
Actually, dogmom, it does. The topography of the beach is such that it will always revert to it%26#39;s natural state.
that%26#39;s what they said...that the winter storms would take it back to normal. i hope they were right.
but you can%26#39;t really generalize that rehoboth ';always'; has a significant dropoff %26amp; heavy surf. sometimes it%26#39;s heavy surf, sometimes it%26#39;s flat as a pancake. sometimes there%26#39;s a steep drop-off %26amp; a week later there%26#39;s not. you never know till you get in.
last year it was consistently dreadful %26amp; dangerous, even with smallish surf. they set records for back injuries %26amp; a LOT of people got scraped up by all the rocks %26amp; broken shells that were deposited by the dredging.
As I said, it always *had* those conditions. I grew up swimming there.
ok. but we%26#39;ve had a house down there for 11 years now %26amp; go year round, although this year various things have kept us from getting down yet. most years, i%26#39;m in the water as early as june %26amp; as late as october, and the conditions change constantly.
but last year it was consistently awful. believe it or don%26#39;t.
Just got back from a week in Rehoboth and was disappointed with the sand/surf. The bottom is extrememly rocky (I was told that this was because of the beach replenishment) and the dramatic drop off did exist. We tried body surfing and boogie boarding and we got pretty scratched/banged up.
Didn%26#39;t swim at Bethany but got down that way this past week as well. Even though I grew up near Rehoboth, I had never been into the Bethany Beach area. I don%26#39;t know if you are familar with it or not, but I was greatly disappointed at the lodging options there (At least as far as condos/hotel options on/near the beach.
Hope this helps.
Thank you boundformaui, your reply does help.
So far it sounds like the sand/surf at Rehoboth hasn%26#39;t yet returned to ';pre-replenishment'; condition. What we disliked most about it was the way the surf consistently smashed us into the sand.
It was actually dangerous.
We have never stayed in Bethany. Pehaps we%26#39;ll try Ocean City , and do a ';walk-about'; for a day in Rehoboth.
The ocean is beautiful where-ever we may end up.
I%26#39;ll be watching for more comments.
well rats, boundformaui, i%26#39;m sorry to hear it apparently hasn%26#39;t recovered.
i%26#39;m SUPPOSED to head down tomorrow, but with all the rain %26amp; flooding, i might wait till wednesday. whatever i do, i doubt i%26#39;ll be trying the water for a few more days :-P
i must admit it was kind of funny last year - sometimes we%26#39;d be totally over our heads %26amp; less than ten feet from shore. VERY tricky getting out, yes.
Trying to decide between Rehoboth Beach %26amp; Bethany Beach for a mid-week vacation with my 15 month old. Which would be better %26amp; why? Any hotel/condo/reccommendations?
We don%26#39;t like Ocean City,MD so want to stay in DE.
For a short stay, I%26#39;d call it a tossup based largely on your own interests. The two towns are close enough (20 minutes) so that it wouldn%26#39;t be a huge mistake to choose one in which to stay and visit the other.
If you choose Rehoboth, you%26#39;ll be less likely to find yourself going to Bethany than the other way around. Rehoboth simply has more (outlet stores, amusements, upscale restaurants) going on than Bethany, but none of that may matter to you. At 15 months, your kid will probably get the most amusement on the beach eating sand, regardless of whether it%26#39;s Rehoboth or Bethany sand.
Rehoboth also has far more hotel rooms than Bethany--you may find it difficult to rent a condo for less than a week, so that may make Rehoboth your choice by default.
Where I%26#39;d give the Bethany the edge is that it%26#39;s smaller and far less crowded than Rehoboth, which makes logistics like finding a decent parking space easier along their downtown commercial strip.
Clear as mud?
Mid-week accomodation at any of the beaches is tricky in August. Hotels are expensive and all the decent homes have been spoken for.
The universe changes, though, after Labor Day. I can%26#39;t imaging your 15-month old will be going back to school in the Fall like most other vacationers, so you will have the place to yourself. Crowds disappear, rates plummet, parking miraculously opens up (and depending on the city and your timing, the meters vanish). Yet, the water is at its peak temperaure, the temperature has mellowed just a bit from the dog days of August, and the outlets stage their real sales.
Don%26#39;t forget about Lewes to the north of Rehoboth (about 15 minutes, oops....10 minutes off-season) and Fenwick Island (10 minutes south of Bethany). Both off these are sans boardwalk and a little quieter than the two beaches you mention.
With a 15 month old, I would pick Rehoboth over Bethany. Rehoboth%26#39;s boardwalk is longer for stroller strolls. A little more activities going on in Rehoboth. Bethany is mostly residental, (there is a boardwalk-a small one, and 1 street with a couple of blocks shopping) , but harder to get around with a 15 month old.
I%26#39;m not crazy about OC either, I find Rehoboth to be quite perfect.
I located two motels that accept cats but I can%26#39;t find much info on them as far as cleanliness and room amenities... the reviews seem to be contradictory...has anyone had recent experience at either of these motels and are able to guide me. Thank you.
Atlantic Oceanside Motel Vs. Sea Esta Motel IIII stayed in the Atlantic Oceanside Motel in August with my girlfriend and 3 children. The room was large enough, however the bathroom was small. The sink was at least outside of the bathroom which had a large counter top for all our things. All rooms have a fridge and microwave, and the hotel even supplied us with some paper plates and napkins. They had good cable tv with HBO. The 2nd floor sun terrace was a great place to hang out and watch the sunrise as I ate breakfast. The pool was a little small, but heated. The office staff were great! They had coffee available 24/7. It was a mere 1 1/2 block to the beach, and even though check out was 11am, they let us keep our car on the lot until 3pm that day so we could enjoy the beach one more day. We would definitely return again.
Hi-
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with homes in the Villages of Five Points community. My wife and I have decided to relocate the family down to Lewes. We currently are hoping to sign a contract with Gemcraft Homes at the Villages of Five Points this coming weekend.
We%26#39;ve been doing some research and found some pretty negative things about Gemcraft at an opinion website (looks like posts from one person though) and also a few complaints about them at the local better business bureau which were settled.
My wife and I really like the community so far. It has so many ammenities that we are looking for tennis, shopping, pool, and close distance to the beach. We are new to buying new construction. I%26#39;m hoping anyone here could chime in with experiences at this community and/or builder.
Here is the builder website: gemcrafthomes.com/communities/…over.htm
Here is the Five Points website which only includes a small snippet about Gemcraft and the West Side where they are developing:
www.thevillagesoffivepoints.com/main.shtml
I%26#39;m interested in your thoughts from those who live in Lewes and any words of wisdom when it comes to dealing with developers and new construction.
Thanks in advance!
Hello-
Have heard the traffic is totally terrible trying to get in and out of Dover. After ';goggle-mapping'; the area it looks like Rt. 9 might be windy, but a much better alternative than the advised route. If anyone has an opinion on that idea, or could tell me if that is not possible, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any help.
Yes, Rt. 9 is a great alternative to Rt. 1 or 113, but obviously, when you get close to Dover is when you will have trouble. All routes within 2-3 miles of the track will be congested. On 1S, drivers pull over onto the shoulder %26amp; its bumper-to-bumper for miles.
Hi
A huge thanks to all of you who posted on areas to check out for our house hunting trip to Newark.
We were very fortunate to find a home in Newark in a nice subdivision southwest of the University between Old Baltimore Pike and 40.
We did look in the Middletown and Odessa area while we were there. It appears to be a nice and growing area, but we wanted to be closer to my husbands future work site in Glascow. Housing there was nice but because many of the homes were newer, there was little privacy between the homes.
Chicagolandgirl --
Thanks for letting us know ';the rest of the story.';
I hope you%26#39;ll be really happy in Newark. I%26#39;m not as familiar with the area where you%26#39;ll be living as I am with the downtown %26amp; northwest Newark areas. But I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll find lots to do and friendly neighbors. I%26#39;ve always said Newark and Delaware generally are a little oasis of ';niceness'; in the midst of the megalopolis from Boston to DC.
Best wishes on a new chapter in your life. Hope your DH enjoys his new job in GlasGow.
Cannot avoid writing here about how fab our time at the vila costa was. We holidayed there for our honeymoon over the summer and it was amazing. For us it was perfect. The service was 5 star, nothing was too much trouble. The food was amazing so much so we ate out only once. This is unusual for us as eating out is an important part of the holiday but the food really was too good to miss. The restaurant is also a really lovely setting to eat your meal in- alfresco dining. During the day the cushioned sunbeds offered too much temptation for us to venture too far. Towels are provided which is also great. We did hire a car but only because the new husband is incapable of relaxing.
spiros, the main man is charming but can be quite persuasive for you to stay in. It didn%26#39;t bother us but it did some people. Can%26#39;t please all I suppose.
If you enjoy chilling in lovely surroundings with good food and good company ( because of the size of the place you cannot avoid getting friendly) this is the place for you.
Don%26#39;t tell too many people though!!
love craig and suzanna
lanc,
I just have this feeling you didn%26#39;t mean to post this in the New Castle, Delaware, forum. It sure doesn%26#39;t sound like anything in the New Castle (on the Delaware River) that we know and love.
Might want to doublecheck the location. If it%26#39;s truly New Castle, Delaware, USA, please tell us more about where you had this wonderful experience!
Does anyone help me regading travel to rehoboth. I am at Delaware , New castle near christiana Mall, As there is no bus of DART opearate to that place now (305) and I was checking with grayhound they don%26#39;t provide the same day drop service. If someone help me abt this, will highly ackowledgable.
Travel to RehbothDear San Beach,
As you%26#39;ve just discovered, public transportation from northern to southern Delaware is not good after the summer season is over.
Wish I had a suggestion. Hundreds of people drive every weekend, even in the fall, from the Newark/Wilmington area to Rehoboth, but I truly don%26#39;t know how you%26#39;d make contact with them. You might try http://delaware.craigslist.org.
Best of luck!
I%26#39;m planning to take my son to Newark to look at the University of Delaware, and we%26#39;d like to take the train. We%26#39;ll be staying at a hotel close to campus, and I%26#39;m wondering if we need to rent a car or if there%26#39;s other transportation to get there from the train station. Any suggestions? Thanks...
The train station is a stone%26#39;s throw from the main campus, and I imagine fairly close (%26lt;1 mile) to any hotel at which you might be staying.

That was a quick reply! Many thanks...
Hi
We are going to be moving to the Newark DE area by the end of the year.
Looking for nice housing developments around 300-350K. Any suggestions?
My husband will be working about 5 minutes from the University. What areas of the city would you advise us to avoid?
Thanks for any information!!!
Hi,
It sounds like some of the developments on the west side of the city of Newark might be a possibility -- if you%26#39;re interested in older homes. They%26#39;re within a couple miles of the main campus and Main St. Newark, so you can even walk or bike to that area.
Off West Main St. (which eventually turns into Nottingham Road) are Oaklands, Nottingham Manor, Nottingham Green (some lower than your budget). Off New London Road is Fairfield Crest (most lower than your budget). Between New London Road and Nottingham Road is Fairfield. Just be aware that some Fairfield homes are built on the Newark Country Club golf course . . . and that golf course is almost certainly going to be sold and developed in the next year or so.
Farther west between 896 and 273 is Covered Bridge Farms, a very nice community (some in your budget, some over).
All of those would be very close to the main UD campus. Biggest drawback is that all those neighborhoods are several decades old. Right along West Main Street is an area known (at least to us oldtimers) as Society Hill -- beautiful, big homes that are even older. Most are still lovely on the outside, though I don%26#39;t know how much modernization has been done inside. If you want brand new, or even newer than 20 years, you%26#39;ll generally have to go farther afield.
You can learn more about the Newark real estate market -- past transactions -- at miva.delawareonline.com/miva/cgi-bin/miva… It%26#39;s the Wilmington, DE, News Journal%26#39;s site for property transfers in the area. The main real estate site for the paper is …gannettonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section… so you can see what%26#39;s being advertised in the paper.
The local paper, The Newark Post, is still a weekly, I think: http://www.ncbl.com/post/. They%26#39;re offering 13 weeks free, so you might consider subscribing. I don%26#39;t know what their real estate section is like.
I grew up in the Newark city limits -- in Nottingham Green. It was a great place to be a kid, but that was, uhhhh, 45 years ago. My Mom still lives in Nottingham Green, and it%26#39;s still a nice neighborhood. I live in PA now, about 40 minutes from Newark.
The ZIP codes that encompass ';Newark'; cover a pretty large area, but the city limits are considerably more compact. A lot depends on where your husband%26#39;s location will actually be. The UD campus itself is pretty spread out these days!
I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ve already looked at the map of Newark and environs, and noticed how close you%26#39;ll be to Pennsylvania. LOTS of people work in Delaware and live in PA, particularly Chester County. There are a lot of reasons for that, but the primary one is the schools. Looooonnnnnggg story about what happened to Delaware schools over the past few decades, but suffice it to say a lot of people who work in Delaware think their kids get a better public school education across the border in PA. Though you definitely pay for it . . . PA property taxes are WAY higher than DE taxes. If you don%26#39;t have kids, it%26#39;s not a big factor -- in fact, you could argue you%26#39;d rather not pay PA school taxe$$$ for other people%26#39;s kids.
The PA income tax is lower, though. And if you live close to the border, as we do, you can shop in tax-free DE and avoid the PA 6% sales tax on most purchases.
I know a tiny bit about western Chicago suburbs, and I%26#39;m not sure the New Castle County, DE, area is analogous. My friends out there seem to live in discrete little towns or villages that are adjacent to one another. In northern Delaware, the town borders don%26#39;t touch. They%26#39;re actually pretty far apart. The mailing addresses are determined by the USPS. IOW, you may have a mailing address of a town or city but not live at all close to the city limits. If you%26#39;re not in the city limits, you%26#39;re a citizen of the county, but not of the city. Different services, different zoning, different building codes.
My mom lives in Newark city limits. She gets sewer/water; trash pickup; and electricity from the City of Newark. The majority of homes with a Newark address are NOT in the city limits. They only vote in county elections, not city. I don%26#39;t really know who provides sewer, trash, etc. Could be trash is private companies. (Electricity is from the statewide utility.)
I%26#39;m not sure it makes a whole lot of difference, but it%26#39;s a system worth understanding before you make your choice.
Gosh, just realized how long this has gotten! I%26#39;ll be happy to discuss further, but maybe more details about your family, the kind of house/neighborhood you%26#39;re looking for, would help me get more focused! LOL! If you want to email me, it%26#39;s aritchey AT yahoo.com
Oh! Almost forgot! When you talk about my hometown -- be sure you pronounce it New Ark. It%26#39;s NOT Newerk, like the city in New Jersey!
Hope you love your new home, wherever it turns out to be!
Thank you a million for the incredible post with soooooooo much information!
I will absolutely check out everything you suggested!!!
Hi
I tried to email you a private thank you to your email aritchey AT yahoo.com but it got sent back :(
Thanks again for the information!
Hi,
You%26#39;re certainly welcome. You did substitute the @ symbol for AT (and no spaces) in my email address, didn%26#39;t you? Can%26#39;t understand why it wouldn%26#39;t work. Try again if I can answer any more questions.
Hi all, well I go from planning a trip to Boston last week to now unexpectadly planning a move to the Wilmington, Delaware area for my job so.....
I need some help and I figured this would be a good place to get some fresh hopefully truthful ideas. anyway I will be working out of the General Motors facility onBoxwood %26amp; Dopson Roads slightly outside Wilmington and need to know what areas are good for establishing new family roots, good housing, good schools (daughter is almost 3 so isnt really a priority quite yet), safe and convienant (however ya spell it, lol). A place I can reside for a few days like a hotel (a fair priced) and maybe a short term rental till my move is complete.
I have alot of ideas of areas, places to stay etc. and such from my employer but I would like some other ideas from real people. My travel time to the GM I would consider approx 30 min. max each way but would consider maybe up to an hour once I get a home. Anything and everything you all can do to make this transition easier would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Brandon
Brandon,
I grew up in Newark, DE, and I know some GM employees lived in Newark. It%26#39;s a college town with a lively Main Street and lots of housing options.
Do you want more urban than suburban? Old or new construction? What%26#39;s important to have access to on weekends? And, though I know it%26#39;s personal, what%26#39;s your price range?
Up to an hour away from the plant could put you in Center City Philadelphia or rural Maryland by the Chesapeake Bay. And, of course, in a wide variety of communities in Delaware.
If you could narrow your criteria a little, I%26#39;ll try to provide more specifics.
Thanks for your response, urban/suburban it doesnt matter if the price is right. I have lived in both, prefer the more quiet setting but again price would be priority! My house right now that I am in the process of selling was a new build when I built in 2001 and market price is yet to be determined, we are thinking 175k-185k but my house in that area would probably be in the high 200-250k by the looks of what I have seen! Old or new construction again doesnt matter price will play a huge part! Things to do would range around good and I mean good resturants, a good mall, Target for my daughter, LOL! My father lives in Bucks County, Pa. so I have family in the general area so..... hope this helps, maybe some neighborhoods, townships, developments, rental properties etc. thanks again!
Brandon,
If a Target is really one of your main criteria, that makes it easy to pinpoint a good location. There are only two Targets in Delaware, one in north Wilmington and one in Dover. Dover would be about an hour south of the plant; north Wilmington (not actually in the Wilmington city limits, just the local term for the area north of the city) is less than half that, depending on how far north you go.
Although Dover%26#39;s the state capital, it%26#39;s generally a small town. There is a good-sized mall (and also a NASCAR track and slots casino). The roads north to the plant are expressways (though they can clog at rush hour).
North Wilmington is suburbia personified; lots of developments with most of the houses at least a few decades old. From there you%26#39;d head south to Boxwood Road. You%26#39;d use mostly four-lane roads, but with lots of traffic lights. It%26#39;s a whole lot closer than Dover, though.
North Wilmington is also sometimes referred to as Brandywine Hundred. (A ';hundred'; is an old term for a portion of the county.) The Brandywine School District is one of the best in Delaware. Delaware%26#39;s second largest mall, Concord Mall, serves the community.
If you start to seriously consider north Wilmington, I recommend you buy an ACD New Castle County map: www.adcmap.com/catalog/product_info.php…
They also have one for Kent County, where Dover is: www.adcmap.com/catalog/product_info.php…
It%26#39;s VERY detailed, and will have every street, all the development names, ';schools, hospitals, points of interest, shopping centers, airports, parks and much more.'; Then you can ask a realtor which of those will have houses in your price range. Off the top of my head, I know Oak Lane Manor and Fairfax probably would.
As far as I can tell, 19803 and 19810 are the ZIP codes for the sections of north Wilmington where you%26#39;d want to look, along the Route 202 corridor, for the shortest commute.
Good luck in your search!
Hi Brandon -
A good place to start is by going to www.VisitWIlmingotnDE.com
I work for the Greater Wilmington Convention and Visitors Bureau and we provide a relocation guide and helpful information to individual who visit our site and request our FREE information...it really is free!
We also provide info an Short and Extended stay housing options.
If you are looking for a short term lease ( up to 6 months) I would recommend that you contact Rosemarie Rosillio at Pettinaro Relocation she may prove to be very helpful. ( her contact info will be on www.VisitWilmngtonDE.com)
Newark and Bear DE are both great areas to explore and should offer numerous housing options within your specified price range.
I personally prefer Wilmington, DE ( the rt. 202 area). It%26#39;s close and convenient to lots of shopping , dining, parks and other outdoor recreation areas...and it would be no more than 20 mins to work.
After visiting the website I%26#39;ve recommended please feel free to contact me with any specific questions you may have....my e-mail will be provided in the contact section as ctodd@.......
Good Luck!
I type my website incorrectly..
It should be - -- - www.VisitWilmingtonDE.com
The area south of Wilmington has a lot of housing options. There are a lot of older small towns that have gotten absorbed my the metropolitan area, so finding established neighborhoods is easy. I would look at places in Newport, Elsmere, and Christiana for good deals on houses in safe neighborhoods.
Areas close to the Christina River have developed a reputation for flooding during heavy rains, so you may want to invest in a property on higher ground.
Distances between things in New Castle County are pretty close. I can drive from my house in Newark to the Target in Wilmington in half an hour to 40 minutes, depending on the traffic.
Do any of you have experience (or have you heard tales) of how quiet, clean and / or gay-friendly the Corner Cupboard Inn (in Rehoboth Beach, DE) is? I%26#39;d appreciate whatever advance info I can get to avoid disappointment later -- thanks!
I stayed there last year with my mom. Although the room was very small, it was also very quiet, clean, cute, close enough to walk to the beach and downtown, and there were at least two gay couples there while we were there, so I assume that means gay-friendly-
Good food, too. Last I heard they didn%26#39;t have a liqour license, allow you to BYOB.
You could not stay in business in Rehoboth if you discriminated against gays .
I friend stayed there recently. She said the atmosphere changed quite a lot. Apparently there was a new marriage with additional children. She compared it to a noisy day care with kids running around.
I think she was there on a week day.
I was there a year ago. It was OK. I thought the woman that ran the place felt like her guests were an annoyance. I didn%26#39;t feel the love.
The little brick patios on the little cottages are nice.
My daughter and I are planning to travel from Hartford, CT to visit the University of Delaware. I%26#39;m looking at Southwest, Amtrak and Greyhound options. The closest Greyhound station is in Dover, DE. I%26#39;m having trouble finding a street address for it in order to get driving directions to the University.
If anyone knows the directions or address, I%26#39;d much appreciate it! A
lso, opinions on the various travel options are welcome also, as it%26#39;s our first trip there. Thanks!
Dover to University of Delaware
There is a bus station in Wilmington, DE which is closer than Dover.
You can get some really cheap deals into Philly on Southwest, but I guess you would still have to rent a car. I flew to Manchester, NH from PHL for 39 dollars each way. I am sure Southwest does deals out of Hartford (BDL)
There is also a train station in Newark but you would need a car to get to the U of D.
Good Luck.
Going to stay in a condo outside of AC next week and don%26#39;t want to spend all my time at casino. Never been to Delaware. How far, what to see? Thanks
The best (and certainly most enjoyable) way to get to DE from AC is to drive south on the Garden State Parkway to Cape May %26amp; take the ferry across the DE bay to Lewes, DE.
The drive is maybe 60 miles, so about an hour or so, then the ferry trip takes 70 minutes. You can check the schedule but the ferries leave about once an hour. I think a round trip ticket for foot passengers is about 18.00 %26amp; includes the bus/shuttle (the old fashioned trolley bus is for Lewes; the bigger buses are for Rehoboth/outlets). Figure about $60. RT if you take your car.
Lewes is very quaint with a New England seaside town feel...lots of history (founded 1631) restored victorian homes, great dining %26amp; nitelife both intown %26amp; along the scenic harbor. Shopping district has many antique %26amp; specialty shops.
Rehoboth also has many fine restaurants %26amp; shopping, plus the outlet malls. Cape Henlopen Park for nature lovers has free admission from Nov thru April.
Riverview,
I agree that the ferry ride is really fun, and the DE beaches are worth seeing.
The other way to do it is to cross the Delaware Memorial Bridge and head to your DE destination. It%26#39;ll take about 90 minutes to get to the DE side of the bridge.
There is lots to see in Delaware, even though it%26#39;s small. New Castle (newcastlecity.net/visitors/visitor_index.html) is a colonial-era city with a lovely view of the river and some historic buildings. Jessop%26#39;s Tavern (http://www.jessopstavern.com) is old and looks it but the food and service are very good. For really fine dining there, try Chef%26#39;s Table at David Finney Inn (http://www.chefstablerestaurant.com/). There are some colonial era buildings to tour, as well.
Downtown Wilmington is trying hard but has yet to provide a whole day%26#39;s worth of ';touristy'; activities. Probably the best cultural attraction in the city limits is the Delaware Art Museum (http://www.delart.org/). Home to some works of great illustrators of a century ago, like Schoonover and Pyle. Terrific Chihuly glass installation . . . but if you%26#39;ve been to Borgata in Atlantic City, you%26#39;ve already seen a great -- though different -- example of his work.
When you include the whole Brandywine Valley (which stretches into nearby PA) there are a lot more options. In Delaware, there%26#39;s Winterthur, a DuPont estate with beautiful gardens and an extensive of early American decorative arts (http://www.winterthur.org/). A small but fun museum is the Delaware Museum of Natural History (http://www.delmnh.org/). Hagley Museum (http://www.hagley.lib.de.us/) is fascinating -- a look into the beginnings of an industrial empire and a way of life 200 years ago.
If you like gardens, cross the line into PA and visit Longwood Gardens, yet another DuPont estate (different heir) (http://www.longwoodgardens.org/). The Chrysanthemum Festival just opened this weekend. Lots to see inside the conservatory (allow at least an hour, more if you%26#39;re a gardener, to tour inside) even if the weather%26#39;s bad. If the weather%26#39;s great you can spend at least half a day. Another possibility is Brandywine River Museum (http://www.brandywinemuseum.org/) with a major collection of Andrew Wyeth paintings.
Here%26#39;s more on Brandywine Valley: http://www.thebrandywine.com/. If you%26#39;re a history buff, you might enjoy Brandywine Battlefield, where Washington and his troops lost badly (http://www.ushistory.org/brandywine/).
Have fun, and come back some time when you can spend more time!
Hi,
My husband and I will be staying in the Rehoboth/Dewey area for a long weekend in mid-September. We are on a tighter budget than usual, so we%26#39;re looking for affordable places to eat, especially seafood. Any suggestions?
Thank you.
Big Fish Grill - http://www.bigfishgrill.com
Go Fish -http://stellaland.typepad.com/stellabites/2005/07/go_fish_rehobet.html
delawarebeachguides.com/Dining/preview.php… - can personally recommend Go Fish, Just in Thyme (get the chef%26#39;s special), Striper Bites and, though not so enthusiastically, Jake%26#39;s and Bethany Blues. Not familiar with the others.
One other thought:
Every Friday in the summer, but call to check on mid-September: Peel your own shrimp, 5-9 p.m. at the Rehoboth VFW Post, State St., Rehoboth Beach. One pound of shrimp, $10; one pound of shrimp and small pitcher, $11; oyster sandwiches, $3; crab cake sandwiches, $4; clam strips, $2; cup of Maryland crab soup, $2. For details, call 227-3469.
For crabs: Lazy Susan%26#39;s,Tenley Court, 1420 Highway One
302-645-5115
Try Ed%26#39;s Chicken and Crabs in Dewey (known to regulars as ';Chicken Ed%26#39;s';)
http://tinyurl.com/l7wuh
Yes the VFW meals are a bonefide bargain...sometimes they have breakfast as well (great sausage patties!).
The Big Fish Grill is delicious %26amp; reasonable, but whether it%26#39;s affordable will depend on if you can put out between $15 %26amp; $25 an entree. It is also usually crowded %26amp; takes a while to get seated.
Would you believe me if I told you there is a buffet that includes AYCE steamed %26amp; fried shrimp, Alaskan King crab legs %26amp; broiled salmon, plus many other meats %26amp; vegetables for $11.50 pp? It%26#39;s in the Rehoboth Mall, Panda Chinese Buffet. Never a wait....they don%26#39;t advertise %26amp; it%26#39;s mostly all locals.
You will pay close to $30. just for AYCE crab legs anywhere else.
Thanks to all of you for your great suggestions!
Does anyone have a favorite place for crab cakes? We are total crab cake junkies.
From Delaware Today magazine%26#39;s ';Best of Delaware'; awards this year:
Mickey’s Family Crabhouse (Bethany Beach) http://www.mickeysfamilycrabhouse.com/
Best Crab Cakes: Downstate, readers
Shark’s Cove Restaurant (Fenwick Island)
http://www.sharks-cove.com/
Best Crab Cakes: Downstate, critics
';Downstate'; covers all the beach areas plus. I%26#39;ve never heard of either restaurant, but the magazine doesn%26#39;t usually recommend lousy food (although ';best'; is, of course, subjective).
Thanks to all of you for your helpful suggestions. Can%26#39;t wait to get there (and start eating)!
We just got back from Rehobeth. We ate at Big Fish Grill and really liked it. It was crowded, and we went at 8:30 on a weekday. I imagine the WE crowds are worse. The service was great and we liked the casual atmosphere. I am quite picky about crab cakes and the ones my husband got there were great. They were on the smaller side, but you got 2- all lump and they were broiled. I got the cioppino [ is that spelled right?] and it was big enough for 2. They had many specials and seafood served everyway poss. Most came with 2 side dishes. I would definitely go back again.
Hi anga,
Thanks for the post. I%26#39;ve read a lot of positive reviews about the Bigg Fish Grill. It%26#39;s on my list for sure.
Counting the days!
Okay, while not seafood, Nicola%26#39;s in Rehoboth Beach (a couple of blocks up from the beach) is the cheap ';hot'; spot. Go early-there is always a line. Famous people have been there. They make this thing called a Nica-boli, awesome! I know it%26#39;s just a ';pizza'; joint, but it%26#39;s a Rehoboth Beach place to go.
Hi,
There is absolutely nothing wrong with knowing of a good pizza place, especially since I happen to be married to a pizza addict. He%26#39;s very curious about the nica-boli.
I have a feeling we%26#39;ll be a bit heavier when we leave that town! :-)
Thanks so much!
ughhhhhhhhhhhhh im trying to find an afforadable place to stay with 5 kids and 2 adults... any suggestions?
When are you coming and for how long? What specific amount is affordable? You%26#39;ll likely need two hotel rooms or a large condo or townhouse with a group your size. Without knowing specifics, it%26#39;s likely you%26#39;ll find nothing affordable until after Labor Day.
Equally as important as your budget...seeing as you posted this in the Dewey forum and given that kids are involved...my first suggestion is to stay anywhere but Dewey. Unless your kids happen to be in their mid-20s, it%26#39;s not nearly as kid-friendly as all the other Delaware beaches.
I can%26#39;t help you with the place to stay, but I do think Dewey was a nice place for kids. We went with other families and my 15 year old was able to take the trolley every nite to the boardwalk in Rehobeth with his friends and I felt safe letting him do this. The main street in Dewey has alot of restaurants and shops, all within several blocks of walking distance. I thought Dewey was safe and clean, compared to the Jersey Shore or Ocean City, MD. There are not many hotels here, however, mostly condos of all sizes. If I were you, I would contact someone in real estate there, or even check things out on the web. We stayed at the Atlantic View Hotel, but I know all they have are rooms with 2 queen beds. Good luck!
consider renting a beach house!!
consider renting a beach house!!
I Stayed at this hotel, and I highly recommend that you stay away.
Reasons:
1) Bugs in room
2) Poor Room Cleaning Service
3) Equipment supplied in room did not function - DVD Player, Printer
4) Wireless internet was continually poor, without an option to go wired.
5) No on site personal laundry facilities
6) No business center
7) Bedspreads - Let%26#39;s just say that the CDC could have done a study
8) Old carpet - you know the kind that sticks to your feet
9) Noisy Air Conditioners!!!
10) a mysterious odor in the room that would come and go
11) And heaven for bid if it rains...the gutter system sounds like a rock band drum section!
12) Oh and you would think that you might have some privacy in the toilet....No...you can hear the guy next room.
Look I travel a lot... So, just be forewarned...if you think paying $114.00 a night merits the above then be my guest. Personally, I don%26#39;t!
I manage the Brandywine Valley Inn in Wilmington, DE. Our Hotel was totally renovated in 2003 from stem to stern. Everything, including the carpet, was replaced. If ever a guest of ours is unhappy with anything and they bring it to my attention, I immediately remedy the situation, move the guest to an acceptable location and / or make the appropriate adjustment to their bill. I never, never want an unhappy guest.
Yes, we have DVD Players with a ';complimentary'; (over 200 movies) movie library and personal printers with paper for your computer in every room. I have never gotten 1 compaint about these 2 amenities. They are all in perfect working condition. If not, I would throw them out and replace them.
We have Hi-Speed Internet access in all of our rooms. Half of our hotel is wireless and the other half is plug in. We also have 10 rooms that are both. We have a 24/7 hotline to Guestlinx and a card in the room stating this with the number. Again, if we can%26#39;t fix it - you don%26#39;t pay for it. We just need a call.
No we do not have an onsite personal laundry. We do however have 7 days a week, laundry service same day. You have it to the desk by 9:00AM - it is delivered back to you by 5:00 PM. There is also a laundry facility 2 miles North of us, if you prefer to do your own laundry.
There is a Business Center in the Lobby and we also supply a Laptop and do all printing, faxing etc. at no charge for our hotel guests.
The other points in your letter are petty and simply untrue as were the points I just answered where you basically lied about our facility. I am sorry that something went wrong and I only wish you brought it to my attention so I could correct it.
I completely disagree with this comment. I stayed at this hotel last week on one of thier packages. When I arrived my tickets and room keys were ready for me 4 hours prior to check in. Joann, at the front desk provided me with several dinner suggestions and even often to shuttle me to the restaurants. I was more than pleased with the customer service. The breakfast selection was excellent and as far as the rooms go they were very clean and the maids were very pleasant. I have even bought a gift certificate for both my children for christmas.
Years ago, travelling Rt 13 (I think) wh\e used to stop to eat at a restaurant that was shaped like a ship that was parked on land on the side of the highway on US RT 13 in Delaware. Does anyone remember it and does it still exist? What was its name and where was it?
Thanks!
Vin_mcp
Urgent request...Looking for a restaurant looks like a shiphi, I know a place like that, I pass it on the way to Chincoteague, from DC. I go Rt 50 to 13. I%26#39;m not sure where exactly it is but it is on a river or inlet, right as you go onto a bridge, perhaps the Severn river. I%26#39;ll try to catch the name of it next time I go.
Urgent request...Looking for a restaurant looks like a shipBoehlhoff, I believe the one you%26#39;re thinking of is at the north end of the Choptank River bridge as you approach Cambridge, Md. on Rt. 50. I haven%26#39;t paid a lot of attention to it while whizzing by, but I believe it used to be a restaurant. Last time I bothered to look, it was in a fairly advanced state of decay and it wouldn%26#39;t surprise me if it will be gone soon, if it isn%26#39;t already.
vin_mcp, if you think it might be the one in Cambridge, you may want to try posting to that forum. But it%26#39;s a good 45 minutes away from Rt. 13, and definitely no longer operating as a restaurant.
There%26#39;s one between Seaford and Laurel, DE alongside Route 13. The sign said it was a ';seafood and Italian'; restaurant. I just passed it 2 weeks ago, driving from Philly to Salisbury MD, but I didn%26#39;t catch the name. Sorry!
The restaurant you remember is on south bound Rt 13 just south of Seaford. It has changed much ovrer the years. It appears to be catering to the local Mexican trade at this time.
My wife and I are looking for some short getaways trips from NYC. We prefer something with 2-3 hours of driving, must be 5-star. Can be a resort, spa, inn, or just plain hotel.
We last tried the mayflower inn in washington, ct.
Please help us with suggestions!
Thank you.
Naples48,
Two choices in northern DE:
Hotel duPont -- http://www.dupont.com/hotel/index1.htm
Inn at Montchanin Village -- http://www.montchanin.com/
They%26#39;re both Mobil 4-star. If you want 5-star according to Mobil criteria, you%26#39;ll have to bypass Delaware.
They are completely different experiences. Hotel duPont is in downtown Wilmington, a M-F commuter city. Unless you have tickets to something at the DuPont Theater (http://www.duponttheatre.com/) or the Grand Opera House (http://www.grandopera.org), or some of the smaller theaters, there%26#39;s not a lot to do in Wilmington on a weekend. (I assume you%26#39;ll be weekend visitors.)
OTOH, Montchanin Village is definitely out in the countryside, fondly called ';chateau country'; around here, because the DuPonts have so many estates -- some of which are now open to the public.
Both lodging options have outstanding restaurants, either under the same roof (Green Room at Hotel duPont: http://www.dupont.com/hotel/dining_green.htm) or a hop, skip, and jump away (Krazy Kat%26#39;s at Montchanin: http://www.krazykatsrestaurant.com/)
You%26#39;ll see from the restaurants%26#39; sites how different the ambiences are, but the food is excellent at both places.
A short distance from Montchanin, a little farther from Wilmington, is another absolutely fabulous restaurant: Gilmore%26#39;s in West Chester: http://www.gilmoresrestaurant.com/. The chef is from Le Bec Fin in Philadelphia. Amazingly innovative food and outstanding service, and it%26#39;s BYO. You%26#39;ll need to make a weekend reservation several weeks ahead; weekdays are easier.
Grand Opera actually has a page with other attractions: http://www.grandopera.org/visitor/. Of the restaurants listed, can definitely recommend Deep Blue and 821.
If you%26#39;d like other restaurant recommendations, post here about your food preferences and we can probably help. There are some *very* good restaurants just outside Wilmington city limits, as well as just across the state line in PA.
And if food is your real interest, and you%26#39;ll put up with less than the finest accommodations (but still very nice, esp. if you like B%26amp;Bs), you really MUST visit the DE beach communities, particularly Rehoboth and Dewey Beach. No question the biggest concentration of outstanding restaurants in DE is within a 5-mile radius of Rehoboth Ave. at the Boardwalk. (And half of that is in the ocean! LOL!!)
Are you willing to pack your suitcase every day? Consider the Hotel duPont one night and Montchanin Inn the next night if you want to spend only one weekend in Wilmington.
Can you tell me how it is like living in Delaware? House prices? Taxes ?,schools ? Any info is helpful.. thanks
You need to be more specific. Asking what it%26#39;s like living in Delaware is like asking what it%26#39;s like living in New York. Long Island and Genesee are as different as Wilmington and Lewes. Can you be more specific? My wife and I spend every minute of our spare time (every weekend from april through november) at our place in ';slower lower'; Delaware.
I`m looking for a laid back area. Maybe a new house around 200,000.00. I need a great high school that has an orchestra. I`m looking into North Carolina but the family complains we are moving to far from Long Island. We are looking into a more affordable life and great weather. We want to still live near the ocean ,like we do here. Thanks in advance.
I lived on LI for many years, graduated from LIU (Post campus). I%26#39;ve been living in PA for the past fifteen years, basically to get away from the cost of living on the island. If we had a choice, and jobs were plentiful, my wife and I would move to Delaware in a heartbeat.
Lower DE, (Slower Lower Delaware as it%26#39;s affectionately known) is the place you want to be if you%26#39;re looking to be near the ocean. Once you get north of Lewes you%26#39;re on the shoreline of the Delaware Bay, which is nice but not the same as being on the Atlantic. Although there is a town that we really like north of Lewes and inland just a bit called Milford. It%26#39;s a very nice town, laid back, away from the tourist areas, but still close to the mouth of the bay (21 miles, which is nothing like 21 miles on Long Island...half hour, tops). Housing in Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, and Bethany Beach is, of course, not cheap since they are the beach towns. But ';cheap'; is a relative term, especially when comparing housing costs and real estate taxes to Long Island. There is no comparison. Just out of curiosity, I did a quick search on realtor.com and saw a house in Milford for $199,000; 1,568 sq ft cape cod style, three bedroom, 2 bath, on a third of an acre. There was also a 1,950 sq ft home that may have been a farm house, on a little over an acre, for the same price. Oddly enough, it only had 2 bedrooms (maybe it was altered at some time)...and there were others.
The real estate tax rate for Milford is, I believe, .41 per hundred dollars of assessed value as of 2002. (Maybe someone could verify this). Which would make the town%26#39;s tax on a $200,000.00 home $820/year. Sussex County real estate tax is .445 and assessed on %50 percent of the 1974 appraisal... that%26#39;s right...1974. (Someone local might verify this as well). So when you compare the many, many, thousands of dollars you pay on LI in real estate taxes it completely changes how you look at home values.
Delaware has no sales tax, none. That makes a big difference in your day to day living. No sales tax on big ticket items either.
Another option is to look for property along the Indian River Bay which, if you look at a map, runs directly south of Rehoboth Beach along Rt 24. Even twenty minutes ';inland'; puts you a mere four miles up the bay, by boat, from the inlet (ten-fifteen minutes to the atlantic by boat).
My wife and I have a place on Long Neck about half a mile from the bay, and we spend every weekend from, well, this weekend coming up, through November and into the early part of December. Just about every Saturday and Sunday we drive to Cape Henlopen State Park to go surf fishing. With a surf fishing tag you can drive onto the beach with a 4x4, park, and hang out all day long...very nice. We also have a small boat that we take out into the Indian River Bay to drop our crab pots Friday evening or Saturday mornings. 24 hours later two pots can bring in 2-4 dozen legal maryland blue crabs.
There is a lot of residential development going on along rt 24. Out in this area, Long Neck, Oak Orchard, etc...you can pick up a new 1,900 sq ft town house for just under 200k. Check the area out. I will say that Rehoboth and the other beach towns along rt 1 can get a little crazy during the summer months, but living on LI you probably wouldn%26#39;t even flinch at the traffic. But you probably wouldn%26#39;t want to live right in town anyway. Lewes, for example, which was the first city in the United States, and might remind you of umm...maybe a Northport or Port Jeff, lists 790 properties for sale...of those, only 21 fall between $175k and $225k. Of those, the ones at $200k are actually in Angola By The Bay, (down rt 24). I don%26#39;t know much about the schools...I don%26#39;t have kids there, but it should be fairly easy to check them out...Milford School District, Cape Henlopen School District...
Anyway, I%26#39;ve been long winded enough. I%26#39;m sure there are more things I could tell you and if you%26#39;d like, I%26#39;ll follow up with another post.
OK, you%26#39;ve got me on a roll...tell me to shut up if you%26#39;d like :). A couple of things that came to mind after I sent the last post. Atlantic water temps off Delaware are warmer than LI. This past October 1st, Anne (my wife) and I were fishing off ';the point'; at Cape Henlopen and throughout the day I went swimming very comfortably. (weather was too cold just a couple of weeks later though). My brother, who spends most of his summer running out to LI to visit friends went with us to Cape Henlopen in late September...he was shocked at how much warmer the water was than at Robert Moses. Said it was the warmest water he was in all year...we were swimming at dusk after he got off the ferry from Cape May. Although Delaware isn%26#39;t as warm as NC it is one ';planting zone'; south of LI and Pennsylvania. Crape Myrtle, which doesnt grow well in PA does just fine in Delaware. The January ';mean'; temp for Islip, for example, is 30.1 degrees. The mean January temp for Lewes is 36.7. Doesn%26#39;t sound like a lot, but believe me there%26#39;s a difference...let%26#39;s face it...one is below freezing, the other isn%26#39;t. All of that snow that dumps on both of us tends to stay away from Delaware.
Also, Delaware has never had a direct hit from a hurricane. LI, as we both know, gets hit fairly often with the remnants of the hurricanes headed up the coast.
Henry tells it like it is...Slower Lower Delaware (LSD!) is a great place to live, especially if you are retired. If not, you may have trouble finding work, even at a fraction of your present salary.
Taxes are very cheap, so are car registrations (%26amp; free inspections), almost everything is cheaper in DE (except gas %26amp; a few grocery items). The Cape Henlopen (HS)School district is the one you want, if you have school age kids.
The only other minus, besides the job market (%26amp; summer traffic!), is home prices. Unless you go with a modular or mobile home on leased ground, you will basically find nothing in your price range unless you go 3+ miles from the beach. At about 3 miles, $225K will buy a small rancher needing cosmetics. At 5 miles or more, 200K will buy a decent home. Even some of the inland towns (Milton, Milford, Millsboro) are getting expensive for decent housing. Laurel %26amp; Seaford are still cheap but quite a hike from the beach.
Good luck to you.
Paddlin mentioned something that I skipped...but for a specific reason. Land lease is definitely an option, and a relatively inexpensive way to live very near or even on the water. Manufactured housing communities like Pot-Nets, for example, are kind of hard to explain, especially since there really isn%26#39;t anything like them on LI...but I%26#39;ll give it a go.
Most people, when they think of a mobile home park, picture sixty-five foot long tin cans on slabs of concrete shoved up against other tin cans on a similar slabs of concrete.
Manufactured housing communities like Pot-Nets, and others in the area, are not like this. The Pot-Nets communities (I%26#39;ll use them as an example because that%26#39;s where our place is) are gated, with guards at the gatehouses during the weekends in the summer. Pot-Nets Bayside has two swimming pools, a small restaurant, crabbing pier, baseball fields, marina, boat ramp, small beaches on the bay, playgrounds, community center, year round security and maintenance and public sewer and water. Lots range from very small (on or very near the water) to much larger...our lot is just under a quarter acre and is a three or four minute drive to the bay, crabbing pier, marina, restaurant, and boat ramp. One of the pools and the baseball diamond is a couple hundred yards away.
All of the housing that has been put in over the past five to ten years is modular, unlike the older mobile homes. Our place, for example, is a 20+ year old mobile home. Next door is a brand new 1,300 sq ft modular home.
The modular home next door is on the market for $80k. But as paddlin pointed out, it%26#39;s a land lease situation. So on top of the 80k you pay for the home, there is annual lot rent. The larger lots, away from the water, are actually less annually (ours is just over $5k). A nice modular on the water will run $90-$150k plus lot rent which is probably $10k annually. These lots are very small. Annual taxes are very low...a few hundred dollars.
The other thing with these communities is that probably half the residents are seasonal and half are full time. Our street is about a fifty-fifty split. You can get a better idea of what these places are like by going to the Pot-Nets web site. (www.potnets.com)
You didn%26#39;t mention how old the kids are. To expand on HNRY AFRIKA %26#39;S post. Long Neck Elementary is about nine years old and a good school. The Middle School is ancient and the High School new this year. Both this school district and the one closer to the beach (Cape Henlopen ) are getting crowded due to all the new construction. There are jobs for skilled trades and Professionals other thabthat low wage with few if any benefits. Hnry Afrika trying to place you . Do you have any kids?
Beached,
No kids that are school age. My wife and I are in our early forties...we actually live in PA but are in Long Neck so often that we say we ';live in Delaware and just drive back to PA to work';. We can be found surf fishing at Henlopen just about every weekend, out on the bay dropping pots, and frequently at the legion on 24 for a pitcher or two. We have friends who just built a house east of rt 1, down by the outlets, so we do spend some time in Rehoboth as well...Dos Locos, Obie%26#39;s, Irish Eyes, Iguana, Frogg Pond.......etc., etc...
Beached,
Do you live on Long Neck?
Wow, you guys are all right!!!!! My child is 13 years old. will be entering 9th grade next year.I will follow up on everything in your post. Thanks.
we are looking to give a gift cert , need restaurant ideas. Thanks!
I can recommend three:
The Back Burner -- http://www.backburner.com/restaurant.html
Dome -- http://www.domerb.com
Six Paupers -- http://www.sixpaupers.com/
Six Paupers is incredible! Great bar and great restaurant. Never Had a bad meal.
Mike L
Dana,
Six Paupers Restaurant in Hockessin (the old Shield%26#39;s Lumber building) has great food and atmosphere. They also do gift certificates online (www.sixpaupers.com). I just bought one. Food, beer and wine selection all great. Tiop notch service also.
Depends on what atmosphere you%26#39;re looking for. Six Paupers and Dome are both great choices. They can get very crowded/loud inside, and the locals tend to bring their pampered and not always well behaved children there instead of cooking family meals at home.
Six Paupers - their Mushroom and Goat Cheese tart is delicious, they serve Harp cool and crisp on tap, the Cedar Plan Salmon never fails to disappoint
Dome - go with the specials, they do a very good steak, vegetables are always perfectly prepared, white pizza is a plesant surprise, skip dessert.
Back Burner - more intimate atmosphere, better for a romantic meal or dinign with the in-laws. Slightly overpriced and service/food quality go up and down throughout the year. Can be a bit snooty at times, but...that%26#39;s Delaware for you.
Which ones would you recommend for a week in Lewes Beach.
What is a diffirence between Pilot Point and Port Lewes communities.
Thanks
Stay away from Lewes Realty!
See previous post under rental properties.
I don%26#39;t know the difference in the two communities.
Have dinner at Striper Bites and breakfast at the Blue Plate Grill.
Try Jack Lingo Realty - that%26#39;s who I%26#39;m going to try next year.
Both communities are beach front, i.e. on Delaware Bay. Pilot Point is older, but many of the townhomes are directly bay front. Aside from the beach, the other amenity is the tennis courts.
Port Lewes townhomes are angled, so only a few are direct bay front, but many have views. Port Lewes offers the bay, beach is thinner than Pilot Point%26#39;s, but has a swimming pool, tennis courts, fishing pier (yes, you can catch fish), and a sundeck along the water.
I have taken many people through both communities and have not noticed a preference.
Hi all! Looking for a hotel/resort whatever for this Saturday to escape the family. Would love it to be within 2 hr drive of South Jersey (Marlton/Cherry Hill) and it would be great to have an indoor pool -- certainly not a deal breaker.
Any suggestions?
Any favorite ';last minute'; hotel rate sites?
Thanks!!
Shari
1 nt away from husband %26amp; kids -- suggestions??In the Rehoboth Beach area Hampton Inn (SMALL pool) or AmericInn.Both are on Route One with many great dining options.Delaware is sales tax free and has three outlets on Route One. Cross Delaware River Delaware Memorial Bridge and take 13 south. It will run into DE1 .There will be 2 $1 toll and 65mph speed limit. Be careful once that pottion ends around the Dover Airbase it%26#39;s hard to slow back down.
Hi everyone,
This will be our first visit to the Delaware beaches. We have 3 kids 4,6 and 7. Besides the beach and pool (staying at Bear Trap Dunes), are there other activities good for young kids? Thanks!
have you gone yet? my kids are the same ages and we are going in august. never been there.
thanks, charlene
The bandstand features free family-friendly performances every evening in season. Over the years, we%26#39;ve seen brass bands, magicians, jugglers, folk musicians, kids%26#39; theatre groups, animal acts. Often they%26#39;ll call kids up to the stage as volunteers, so sit close.
I%26#39;m assuming reconstruction of the bandstand has been completed (it wasn%26#39;t finished during our last visit in the Spring, but it looked close).
Other than the bandstand and just hanging out at the beach %26amp; pool, you may need to drive yourself 20 minutes north to Rehoboth or south to Ocean City for some major amusements appealing to young kids.
Hello,
In March, my wife will be 6 months pregnant and turning 30. Since everything is about the baby, I want to take her somehere for her birthday where the focus can be on her--while acknowleding that she is pregnant--no hiking, rafting, etc.
Looking for something within 3 hours drive of Philadelphia
Thanks!
responded to you already on the maryland forum...just wanted to say, i hope you will tell us what you decide on! and repeat...she%26#39;s got a keeper!
My sweetie and I are taking a cross-country road trip next August and we%26#39;d like to stay in hotels or motels that have that real vintage vibe.
I love the Safari Inn, in Burbank California. Sweet Motel with pool and vintage neon but modern facilities.
It%26#39;s easy to find pictures on the web r in books of classic neon signs but I want to stay the night in a place that looks straight out of the 50s (or 30s, 40s, 60s) but isn%26#39;t a rundown dump.
If you have a recommendation of someplace unusual, that works too.
Thanks for any help!
Art Deco maybe?
Atlantic coast SOFLA....as in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach, etc....DOZENS of updated yet vintage hotels along Ocean Blvd.
Since you%26#39;re in the area, try El Bonita Motel in St. Helena in Napa Valley your first night-- elbonita.com (warning: August has high season rates; it won%26#39;t be cheap). Maybe then the Desert Hills Motel in Carson City, NV. I%26#39;ll then plug one in my old hometown-- the Viking Motel in Norway, MI (but I can%26#39;t vouch for how much for its rooms%26#39; or neon%26#39;s conditions has been done since when I left in the mid-1980s, and it seemed an oldie then).
Sounds like a fun quest.
I will be traveling across the US with my husband this coming summer. He’s a long haul truck driver and me and my son plan to join him for a few weeks every now and then. I have no clue where well end up stopping in your state so I was hoping you could all help me by telling me cool kid friendly places to see. I know there will be times where we’ll be waiting a day or so to pick up or drop off and I’d love to use that free time to explore areas. I’m the kind of person who likes to plan as much as possible. So any and all recommendations of places to stop and see would be greatly appreciated
Thanks so much for all your help

In Dover around the center of the state is Dover Air Force Base. They have a museum . There is also is Agriculture Museum in Dover which is pretty neat . Farther south on the western side is Trap Pond State Park. Close to that in Laurel are 2 flea markets open on week ends. Southeast Delaware are the Ocean Beaches.Lewes is family oriented with a beach on the Delaware Bay and Ocean access at Cape Henlopen State Park . The park has a bathhouse and food with a guarded beach . You can sit on the beach and watch the dolphins fairly close in. There are fishing boats going from the canal in Lewes. Headed down the highway from Lewes there are movies, tax free shopping outlets and two amusement parks. Rehoboth Beach is the next town offering a nice boardwalk and Ocean Beach The town offers everything from burgers and fries /ice cream to first class restaurants Next is Dewey beach Nice beach and several bars .On into Indian River State Park offers swimming beaches ,fishing beaches on both the Ocean and Rehoboth Bay . When in these areas pay attention to posted speed limits and parking regulations and meters There is great recreation in these areas with strict enforcement..
Lisa,
How old is your son? Does he (or you and your husband) have any special interests? Small as it is, Delaware has a lot of variety in activities.
Hope you enjoy your time in the East. My husband grew up in Gold Beach but has been on the East Coast ever since he graduated from college. He still misses Oregon (but not the rain!).
